Kevin Costner took to his Instagram account earlier this week to pay tribute to the late, great Graham Green, who passed away on September 1st at the age of 73.

The movie star isn’t all that active online, so it’s clear that this loss really hit home for Costner. He and Green starred together in the 1990 film Dances with Wolves, and both were nominated for Best Actor (Costner’s Lieutenant Dunbar) and Best Supporting Actor (Graham’s Kicking Bird) at the Academy Awards.

Graham had reportedly been dealing with a lengthy illness, and died in Stratford, Ontario after fighting a valiant fight. He was described by his agent as a “man of moral, ethics and character,” and that he’ll be “eternally missed.” The Canadian actor first got work in television, starring in the 1979 drama series The Great Detective. Four years after that, Greene made his film debut in Running Brave.

However, his big break was undoubtedly starring alongside Kevin Costner in the 1990 film Dances with Wolves. His role as Kicking Bird in that movie earned him an Oscar nomination, and ultimately jumpstarted his career. Greene went on to star in over 200 film and television productions afterwards, including Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995), The Green Mile (1999), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), Wind River (2017), and even had roles in Taylor Sheridan’s 1883 and Tulsa King.

Costner’s kind words about Graham Greene mainly stemmed from their time as co-stars on Dances with Wolves. The Yellowstone star had nothing but great things to say about his friend, colleague, and fellow Oscar nominated actor, and shared a clip from the film along with this message:

“A few things come to mind when I think of Graham Greene and our time together on ‘Dances With Wolves.’ I think of how willing he was to learn the Lakota language. I think of my joy when I heard that his work on the film was recognized with an Academy Awards nomination.

And I think of this scene in particular, when he was able to establish so much about the relationship between Dunbar and the natives with so few words. He was a master at work and a wonderful human being. I’m grateful to have been witness to this part of his lasting legacy. Rest in peace, Graham.”

Graham Greene certainly left behind quite the legacy, and he’ll forever live on in the roles that he poured his heart into both for the big and small screens.

Kevin Costner clearly thought the world of Greene, and admired his acting abilities and, more importantly, the fact that he was a great person. Many fans jumped into the comments section of Costner’s post to further eulogize Greene, and also commend him for his role in the classic movie that was directed by Costner and took home seven Oscars, including Best Picture.

And there’s no doubt that Dances with Wolves wouldn’t have been the same without Graham Greene’s standout performance as Kicking Bird. Costner recognizes that, and that likely played a role in the movie star sending out this tribute to his dear friend and former co-star.

Of course, many might recognize Greene more recently from his scene in 1883… the scene that essentially set the foundation for the entire Yellowstone saga.
