A softer side to Jessie Murph.

Jessie Murph broke onto the country music scene… sorta… after she was featured on Koe Wetzel’s tune “High Road.” The single scored both artists their first number one hit, and although fans were initially unsure about her feature on the song, it clearly grew on them. After releasing “High Road” and featuring other country artists on songs early in her career, it appeared that Jessie Murph was going down the path of country music, especially after being nominated for the ACM New Female Artist of the Year.

However, Murph was shocked to receive the nomination because she does not consider herself to be a country artist.

“No, that was such a big surprise. I wouldn’t look at me and be like, ‘That’s a country artist.’ I don’t know that I deserved to be in that category. I feel like there’s other country artists that maybe deserved to have that spot.”

And if you’ve ever heard her music, that really shouldn’t come as a surprise… she’s more of a rap/pop artists. She says that while she was honored to be recognized in that light, she doesn’t really care too much about genre, comparing it to a dress code that restricts creativity:

“I love mixing genres and I think that I’ll always do it… I don’t like the thought of boxing myself in to express myself.”

Murph has recently gone viral with her song “Blue Strips,” which is about throwing $100 bills at the strip club. And her latest music video for her song “1965” has caused a lot of controversy for featuring a full-on sex scene, after showing a small child in the shot immediately before it. I’m still not sure how it was even allowed on YouTube… but regardless, she’s CLEARLY not a country singer.

But as Murph said, she doesn’t like boxing herself into one genre and will often dabble with many genres, and she meant it. During a soundcheck at a recent concert, Jessie Murph laid down a cover of Miranda Lambert‘s “Tin Man,” and she blew it out of the park.

Miranda Lambert released “Tin Man” in 2017 as the third single from Lambert’s sixth studio album, The Weight of These WingsThe heartbreaking song, penned by Lambert, Jack Ingram, and Jon Randall, compares the numbness and loss of losing someone you love to the feeling of the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, who does not have a heart. To this day, it’s one of Miranda’s greatest singles, one that got criminal treatment at country radio.

Given that Murph’s recent music has been far from the beautiful acoustic ballad, the internet was taken aback at how well she delivered the lyrics, doing justice to the song.

It did not take long for social media to fill up the comments section of both videos, noting that this is the kind of music she should be singing.

“If she were to sing real country, she would have so much potential.”

“The control is so real.”

“You hear every emotion in her voice. She needs more recognition and respect.”

“And people say she can’t sing.”

“This. This is what she should be singing. These songs fit her voice so well.”

“I just know this girl has been hurt really bad in all the ways…”

“My goodness. I felt this. I’m a huge Miranda fan. You did it justice.”

“She should do more of this!!

“I wish all of her songs were like this, leave the rapping to someone else, that voice is too damn good.”

While I love this cover and the conviction she had while delivering the painful lyrics, if that’s not what she wants for her sound, she doesn’t have to do it. That’s the beauty of being an artist: they can express themselves in any way they want. Although traditional country fans may not be fond of the sound she’s currently leaning into, a closer look at her success reveals that she has fans who resonate with and support her art.

However, it is nice to hear this softer side of Murph and to sit back and enjoy the beauty of her voice and admire the vocal control she possesses. I’d love to hear a full rendition of this song one day. While it’s far from the sound that Jessie Murph is building for herself in the studio, she knocked this one out of the park.

Fire up Miranda’s version before you leave.
