‘He owes me’ – Brentford boss Keith Andrews makes cheeky Yoane Wissa transfer plea
Brentford boss Keith Andrews cheekily claimed Yoane Wissa ‘owes’ him to remain at the club but conceded there is no guarantee. Wissa has been the subject of heavy interest from Newcastle, who have already had two offers for the Congolese forward rejected this summer. GettyThe 28-year-old has one year remaining on his contract with Brentford[/caption] Having lost star forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, the Bees were reluctant to let another one of their goalscorers leave. However, Brentford’s stance on a Wissa sale is understood to have softened should they manage to source a replacement, with the club in advanced talks to sign Bournemouth’s Dango Outtara. talkSPORT understands Newcastle expect to get a deal for Wissa over the line by the end of this week. Given Mbeumo and Wissa combined for a staggering 39 Premier League goals last term, Andrews is understandably reluctant to lose the Congolese international. Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface, Andrews playfully pointed out how he was responsible for nearly half of Wissa’s goal tally last term so a continued spell in west London is the least he can do to repay the Irishman. “I have got a good relationship with Wiss,” Andrews said. “I worked really hard with him last year to try and find goals. Seven of his 19 goals last year came from set pieces. “He owes me really, so he shouldn’t be going anywhere, to be blunt!” However, Andrews, who was promoted from Brentford’s set piece coach to head coach following Thomas Frank’s departure to Tottenham, lamented the last few weeks surrounding Wissa’s future have not been helpful. Does Andrews believe Wissa could go? Wissa, who has less than one year remaining on his contract, believes he had a gentleman’s agreement with Brentford to leave this summer after agreeing to stay for the 2024/25 campaign. Andrews’ crafty set pieces ensured Wissa’s goal tally remained healthyShutterstock The striker withdrew from Brentford’s pre-season tour and is currently training alone in order to force a move. NEOM and Al-Nassr have both made recent approaches – and both Saudi clubs believe Brentford will sell for around £40m. However, Wissa wants to play Champions League football and is willing to wait for Newcastle, or another club in Europe. “It hasn’t been ideal for him,” Andrews said. “But what I think underpins that is a mutual respect, that we understand the situation. “Hopefully, from my point of view, he’s still at the club. That hasn’t changed in the last few days. Nothing is fresh, nothing is new. GettyThe Bees boss knows Wissa is no certainty to be a Brentford player in September[/caption] “It’s a scenario that isn’t wanted from me, clearly. Why would anyone want to lose a striker that scored 19 Premier League goals? “It is what it is, unfortunately. I’ll keep communicating to Yoane as he is with me, and again, going back to that respectful relationship, that will certainly remain.” Although the pair may share a close bond, Andrews is fully aware it may not translate to his wish of keeping Wissa. When asked by Matterface whether he believed he could convince Wissa to remain, Andrews replied: “I don’t know, is the honest answer. “There’s interest which has been well-documented. It’s felt like a long few weeks from where it started to where it is now. “There’s a few more weeks to go. I’d love Yoane to be here when the window closes because he’s a top, top player and a top person that fits into the value and ethos of the club really, really well. That’s what I hope, but we’ll have to wait and see.” Who could Brentford replace Wissa with? At present, Wissa remains on Brentford’s books. But talkSPORT understands the Bees have already zeroed in on a potential replacement in the form of Bournemouth flyer Outtara. Burkina Faso international Ouattara scored seven goals in the Premier League last season, including a hat-trick against Nottingham Forest in January. The 23-year-old emerged as a useful striker for Bournemouth amid an injury crisis, having previously been deployed at left-back or wing-back. He joined the Cherries in a £19.5m move from FC Lorient in 2023 and is contracted to the Vitality Stadium until 2028.
