The year was 1982.
The term “internet” was technically born, but not really in the lexicon of the common man, the first CD player was released by Sony, Michael Jackson’s Thriller was released and would go on to become the best-selling record of all time, Diet Coke his supermarket shelves… I mean, what a time to be alive.
But down in Texas, another music legend was in the making, a young military vet named George from Pearsall, Texas, had just burst on the scene with his lead single “Unwound” in 1981. But by 1982, King George had a few singles under his belt, including his first number one, “Fool Hearted Memory,” and he was gearing up for a show at Son Valley in Victoria, Texas.
And this video might just be one of the first interviews he ever gave. And if it’s not, it’s certainly one of the earliest of record. The caption states:
“Back when I was the 19-year-old associate producer for “The Weekend Journal” on Victoria, Texas’ tiny ABC affiliate KXIX-TV, one of the artists we interviewed was a fresh young country artist with a winning smile.
His name was George Strait, and ever since our show went “Strait” off the air in 1982, this footage has gone unseen.”
And the best part of the entire interview? When the host introduces him as the guy that can…
“Supposedly make a cowgirl’s jeans twitch at 100 yards.”
HAHAHAHA…. I love it. I don’t even really know what it means, but I love it.
Of course, George would go on to become one of the biggest things country music has ever seen, and make no mistake, even at 71 years old, the man still has a way with the ladies. If you announced a George Strait meet and greet, you’d have a gaggle of 50 year old women, 25 year old women, and every age in between, lined up into the next county just to get a look at the man.
The King of Country, the most #1 singles of all time, and the only man in country music history that can make a cowgirl’s jeans twitch at 100 yards… long live the King.
George Strait – Kennedy Center Honoree
President Trump announced the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors class, which includes country music icon George Strait. He was the first one announced among the likes of KISS, Sylvester Stallone, Broadway actor Michael Crawford, and disco legend Gloria Gaynor.
President Trump did not attend the Kennedy Center Honors during his first term, but during the first six months of his second term, has become much more involved, appointing other country artist Lee Greenwood to the board. President Trump appointed himself as chair of the board, and has revamped most of it by bringing in an entirely new, (not woke) group to run the Kennedy Center.
Many of us probably mostly know of the Kennedy Center, officially titled The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, because of the annual Kennedy Center Honors event that inducts a new group of artists and entertainers each year.
Located in Washington, D.C., it’s a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, and notable country acts who have been honored over the years include legends like Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, George Jones and many more.
During a televised announcement today, President Trump read off some of Strait’s accomplishments from his decades as one of country’s premiere artists, adding
“The first is country music star, actor and producer George Strait. Great. Over an extraordinary four decade career, George has sold over 120 million records worldwide, amassed 60 #1 hits, and produced 33 Platinum certified albums, more than any other living American. That is amazing.
He is believed by millions of people to be as good as you can get, and he is beloved by hundreds of millions of people all over the world. He’s really something, and they call him The King of country, and we know him very well. George Strait.”

He also remarked on The King’s “good looks” when they revealed the portrait of him, and I can confidently say that, yes, President Trump, he’s one of those rare breeds that somehow looks better with age:

The 2025 Kennedy Center Honors will take place in December and air on CBS.
Trump said during this announcement that he was asked to host the event, and he didn’t want to, but it sounds like that might be what’s happening:
“I didn’t want to do it, but they’re going to say I insisted—I did not insist. But I think it will be quite successful. I used to host ‘The Apprentice’ finales, and we did rather well with that.”
There will be plenty of performances and speeches on behalf of the honorees by other artists, so you’re sure to see several big country names on hand to celebrate the King later this year for this much-deserved accomplishment. Long live The King. The post He Might Be The King Of Country Music, But George Strait Could Also “Make A Cowgirl’s Jeans Twitch At 100 Yards” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
