Skybreak is back with HALF BLOOD, a stunning album that proves bass music doesn’t need to sacrifice emotional intelligence for physical impact.
The 11-track project is a personal reflection on Skybreak’s transatlantic upbringing, inspired by the textures and rhythms of the New York Subway and London Underground. Raised by an American mother and British father, the producer grew up moving between New York City and London, cities that would ultimately shape his first album in nearly seven years. He frequented the latter’s storied rave scene, growing deeply infatuated with the shapeshifting electronic music of legends like Coki, Burial and Aphex Twin.
But the train and subway aesthetics aren’t just window dressing. They brilliantly inform every sonic decision in HALF BLOOD, from the echo of distant platforms to the rhythmic clatter of rails.
Look no further than “STREET GARDEN,” which might be the album’s masterpiece. The imagery hits viscerally from the very first lyric: “Paper cut on a train ticket to nowhere.”
The scintillating UK garage track’s metaphor of tending seeds in concrete soil while battling “pesticidal love” is both specific enough to feel lived-in and universal enough to sting, reframing toxicity through botanical language both clever and heartbreaking. Meanwhile, Skybreak’s luminous pluck synths dance atop thunderous subs like flowers refusing to die in harsh conditions.
The album’s devastating lyricism continues in “CAN’T LET GO,” where the tension between public facades and private battles is rendered in crystalline dubstep. Here, flowanastasia’s vocals glide over deep, undulating bass, unraveling an aching narrative of hidden struggle: “You only see the highs, not the lows / I’m trying to free the lock on my soul / I’m not the one you think you know.”
Elsewhere, Skybreak cranks up the aggression with another surefire highlight, “RED HOT SKULL,” which channels the breakbeat warfare of The Prodigy. The track’s unfiltered energy and snarling production would make the late Keith Flint proud.
“STONE KOLD” is no less ferocious, delivering a no-holds-barred banger alongside North London grime vet Subten. The same can be said of “ANXIETY,” which delivers exactly what its title promises through a claustrophobic 140 dubstep ripper that feels like being trapped in an elevator with your worst thoughts.
“This record became a catalyst for rediscovering the roots of the genre,” Skybreak said in a statement. “An ode to my heritage, both as a dual citizen of the US and UK and an electronic music fan at large. My bridge between the sounds and aesthetics of New York and London. Most importantly, a diary documenting the mistakes and growing pains of learning to become my most authentic self. I believe this to be my maturest body of work yet and I’m ecstatic to share this with the world.”
