A new contender for worst song of the year.

Despite how great of a spot country music is in now, complete with thriving subgenres, a healthy traditional scene, living legends continually producing stellar projects and brilliant songwriters being discovered seemingly every day, there are still moments every now and then that make me question everything.

Today is no different with Flo Rida’s head-scratching new song with TikTok star-turned-“country” artist, Cooper Alan, and Shaylen, “Carrying the Club,” which samples George Strait’s iconic 1997 hit, “Carrying Your Love With Me.”

Once one of the biggest names in Hip-Hop, Flo Rida has a laundry list of club hits such as “My House,” “Wild Ones,” “Club Can’t Handle Me” and, of course, his 2007 diamond-certified debut single, “Low.” These days, however, the Florida rapper has begun to fade into obscurity, mainly playing at state fairs, smaller venues and postgame concerts at MLB games.

Much in the vein of Akon, who recently delivered laughable “country” versions of his past hits, “Drunk Right Now (Na Na Na)” with Josh Ross and “Hold The Umbrella” with Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox (both of which were subsequently ridiculed), I guess Flo Rida thought it was his turn to attempt to revive his career with a country crossover. Spoiler alert: It did not work.

Right off the bat, Flo Rida immediately bastardizes Strait’s iconic chorus with the absolutely brilliant spin, which features him saying he’s carrying the club from Miami up to Tennessee.

“I’m carrying the club with me
From Miami up to Tennessee
Turn the dive into a V.I.P.
I’m carrying the club with me
Down on Broadway where they do-si-do
Or out in Paris everybody knows
All night long, don’t matter where I be
I’m carrying the club with me”

The track then transitions into your standard Flo Rida fare on the verse with the rapper singing about the DJ “mixing up George Strait and Snoop” and turning the hole-in-the-wall bars into clubs before Cooper Alan appears later in the song on the second half of the second verse.

Using some embarrassingly bad auto tune, Alan emphatically sings the genius lines, “This bar can’t even handle everything we’re bringing to it. That neon shinin’ like it’s Vegas on a dirt road. Country girls dropping low on that dance floor,” before joining Flo Rida on the final chorus.

Like nearly any of these seemingly endless rap-country crossovers that rear their ugly heads each and every year, I just have to wonder, “Who’s the target audience?” Country fans obviously aren’t going to like a bastardization of a beloved classic like “Carrying Your Love With Me,” and most Hip-Hop fans aren’t even familiar with the song itself. Much like the current  “Yee-DM” trend that keeps getting forced upon us, I simply do not understand both the appeal and the end goal.

Here’s to hoping Strait never hears this trainwreck of a song.
