The past few years have been a whirlwind for Evan Honer.
One of the most prolific young artists in the industry, the Arizona native and Nashville resident released his debut album West on I-10 on the day he graduated college in 2023, and he’s had the pedal to the metal ever since. Honer followed that one up with his phenomenal sophomore project Fighting For in 2024, and has filled his catalog in with a slew of singles and EPs over the past couple of years as well. But as one would hope is the case with the a promising young artist, Honer’s lyricism and sound seem to improve with each release, and his brand new album Everything I Wanted is far from an exception to that trend.
Titled Everything I Wanted, the brand new record provides an introspective look into Honer’s life as he finds himself in the throes of his 20s, grappling with the existential angst that comes with the contradictory nature of the fast-paced lifestyle his career requires of him and an increasingly strong desire to settle down. Likely spawned in part by his cross country move to Nashville during this busy time in his career, these sentiments are conveyed through deftly detailed lyricism that will undoubtedly evoke similar emotions in the listener as Honer weaves through stories of love, vulnerability, uncertainty, and life on the move.
Featuring 13 masterfully written tracks, Everything I Wanted also marks a sonic leap in Honer’s budding career. While his first two albums and the majority of his catalog to date are generally acoustic and stripped-back with a “folkier” feel, his latest release places more focus on the indie and alternative-pop aspect of his sound that has always been present in his music, but never quite this prominent.
Released via Cloverdale Records, Honer’s own independent label, Everything I Wanted was recorded over 18 days in the garage-turned-studio at his house in Nashville. Employing the talents of several of his friends and Cloverdale labelmates to bring this vision to life, the project was produced by frequent collaborators Garrett Hall and Shane Travis, and the tracklist features co-writes alongside the likes of Meg McRee, Thomas Rowland, and Jack Wharff, among others. Honer had his hand in the writing of all 13 tracks, though, and with a handful of solo writes on the album as well, it is clear his experiences are the driving forces in each song.
From the first note in the hard-driving and captivating title track “Everything I Wanted” that kicks off the album, to the final chord of his poignantly introspective ballad “Wonder,” Honer’s latest album is a masterclass in lyricism and a welcomed foray into the indie edge of his folky sound. Though these songs are particularly relatable for all of the young adults out there still trying to find their way and sense of belonging in this ever-changing world, the messages and themes that form the ethos of this project are bound to resonate to some degree with anyone who listens.
Here’s a few early favorites:
