Eric Church the romantic.

Eric has been married to his wife Katherine since 2008, before he had even released his sophomore album Carolina. But unlike a lot of couples in country music, Eric and Katherine are extremely private about their marriage, and it’s even rare that Katherine joins him for public appearances. She might attend an award show here and there, but generally, we really don’t know much about them as a couple. That’s not say Katherine did not play a huge role in Eric’s career.

They met when Katherine Blasingame was working as a music publisher in Nashville, and she wanted to pitch a songwriter she was working with to Eric. But it was Eric and Katherine who ended up as a pair, and they eventually got married in a private ceremony on January 8th, 2008 at Westglow Resort & Spa in Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

He’s long credited his wife with being a soundboard for his song ideas, given her experience in the music industry. And on that Carolina album, Eric included a song called “You Make It Look So Easy” that he wrote for his wife ahead of their wedding. And he decided to record “Like Jesus Does,” which is one of the few songs over his long career that he didn’t also write, because it was a favorite of Katherine’s.

While “You Make It Look So Easy” was never an official radio single, it might be the most meaningful song on the record because he wrote it specifically about her and their relationship.

He sings about how Katherine is his safe place and refuge from the road, and how the fact that she’s just as stubborn as he is makes their relationship work:

“I got a hard head, I was born that way
And that makes me wrong more than I say
But I thank God you got a hard head too
I guess he must have known you’d need that to get us through

‘Cause when it comes to lovin’ me
Baby you make it look so easy
Yeah, baby you make it look so easy”

But my favorite fun fact about this song that many may not know is that Eric wrote it before their wedding and performed it for her as a surprise on their wedding day. I mean, it doesn’t get much more romantic than that…

I even did a little digging and found a few photos from their wedding, and I’m relatively certain this one captures the moment Eric played “You Make It Look So Easy” on his acoustic guitar, and of course, had his bride in a puddle of tears.

I’ve never heard him talk much publicly about this moment, and I would absolutely love to hear Katherine’s side of the story, but it sounds and looks like something out of a fairytale. Since this day, Eric and Katherine have welcomed two boys, Boone McCoy Church who was born in 2011 and Tennessee Hawkins “Hawk” Church, who was born in 2015.

More recently, Eric talked about how deeply in love he and Katherine still are over 15 years later:

“True love to me is when you love a person in spite of all their fallibilities, and for me, I have a lot of ‘em. I’m definitely at times hard to love, and that’s what’s great about Katherine and the way she loves me. She loves me in spite of those things and really for those things.”

They have such a beautiful love story, and I honestly love the fact that Katherine doesn’t try to build a brand off of her husband and stays out of the spotlight. She seems so down-to-earth, and this really is SUCH an underrated wedding song:
