Did You Know That Yellowstone Star, Kevin Costner, Has His Own Country Band?

Who knew John Dutton Kevin Costner had it in him?

If you call yourself a true fan of Kevin Costner, you are likely already aware of his side project country rock band. If you aren’t a part of the 70-year-old’s fan club, then you might be learning about his musical chops for the very first time. Turns out that Kevin Costner is so skilled and gifted that he can do anything that he sets his mind on.

Well… maybe besides his passion project Horizon. The jury is still out on that one.

But anyways, when Costner isn’t busy with projects meant for the big and/or small screen, you just might catch him playing with his country band: Kevin Costner and the Modern West. Since 2010, the band has been crafting and releasing music, and their sound could be described as a melting pot of southern rock, folk, and classic country.

And I’ve got to hand it to Costner… he makes for one hell of a frontman. You might be skeptical of the actor’s singing voice, but rest assured… he holds his own. Kevin Costner and the Modern West have put out some legitimately good music. Now would I seek it out all the time? Or have it featured heavily in my rotation? Probably not. But it is good enough to throw on at the occasional get together.

Makes for a great talking point too. Throw on a Costner song and turn to your friend and say:

“You know this Kevin Costner right?”

Imagine starting that conversation with an ice cold beer in your hand. PEAK vibes right there, I’m telling ya.

Kevin Costner and the Modern West have put out a number of songs and records over the years. The group even curated an album called Tales from Yellowstone for the hit Western show Yellowstone that Costner starred in (until he didn’t). There are actually songs from that project that were featured throughout Yellowstone’s five season run.

Outside of a couple of live shows later in 2024, Kevin Costner and the Modern West haven’t been active on the touring front. They also haven’t released any new music since 2020’s Tales From Yellowstone. But all signs point towards them still being together, and with the free time that Kevin Costner seemingly has now, I wouldn’t put it past them to pop back up sometime soon.

And I’m sure if you haven’t ever heard the band in action, you are just wanting to get a taste of what Kevin Costner and the Modern West are all about. Luckily for you, I gathered together some of their biggest hits from throughout the years. Some of their hits go back to the simpler times of 2008 and 2010, while others are fresh from the weird year of 2020.

If you are anything like me, you’ll listen to each song and think to yourself, “I can’t believe that’s Kevin Costner.” I’m here to tell you that it definitely is, and he’s not half bad as a lead singer.
