Here we go again…

Chase Elliott has been named NASCAR‘s Most Popular Driver seven years in a row, which has naturally led to plenty of allegations over the years that NASCAR favors Elliott when it comes to calls on the track. (Basically, a lot of people think he’s the Kansas City Chiefs of NASCAR).

And today’s race at Watkins Glen is helping them make their case.

Elliott used some strategy to gain track position by staying out at the end of the first stage of the Go Bowling At The Glen, but just a few laps after the race went back to green in stage two Chase quickly began falling back as all the cars on fresh tires blew past him.

Alan Gustafson, crew chief of the #9 car, called Elliott to pit road on lap 28. But before he made his way around the track to come to pit road, Josh Berry got hit by Ty Dillon and took a hard hit into the wall off of turn 5.

The NBC Sports broadcast team seemed sure that the wreck would bring out a caution, meaning pit road would be closed and Elliott wouldn’t be able to make his stop. But NASCAR didn’t throw the yellow flag, allowing Elliott to bring the #9 car to pit road for service.

Berry was eventually able to get going, and Elliott made his pit stop, but while he was still on pit road, NASCAR ended up throwing the caution anyway for debris on the track from Berry’s wreck – which was another huge break for Elliott, who was able to catch back up to the field after his pit stop.

The entire sequence ended up working out in Chase’s favor, despite the fact that his pit crew had trouble on the stop, saving him a bunch of time because the caution wasn’t thrown immediately but came out after he made it to pit road.

And many fans are convinced that NASCAR held off on throwing the caution until Elliott could make it to pit road:
