New music loading from Cole Chaney.

Earlier this year, Cole Chaney released his first single in nearly three years. The pride of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, went full-blown Appalachian grunge on “Alone?” Prior to “Alone?”, his last major release came in September 2022 when he released four original songs in tandem with OurVinyl for his OurVinyl Sessions EP.

Luckily for fans craving new music from the 25-year-old, his catalog is about to expand significantly with the announcement of his upcoming record, In The Shadow Of The Mountain, slated for a September 19th release.

Chaney shared the news of this project, along with giving fans a preview of what’s in store for the album with a new single, “The Unsatisfied.” Chaney has been sitting on this tune for quite some time, playing it for a Western AF session in 2022. Fans were drawn to the lyrics of the acoustic ballad, but Chaney waited until the right time to get into the studio to record a full band version of the track.

The honest song wrestles with the dream you’ve been chasing, finally coming true, but the struggle of wondering if all of these sacrifices are genuinely worth it:

“I’ve been working my a** off, every day is a coin toss, I’ll be striking gold or bedrock
I don’t get that much sleep, no, gambling takes upkeep, each day I throw more in the pot
I could blame the stars, for if I were a rocket man, I’d fly right into the sun
This pounding heart runs on Gemini blood, taking no account of the damage I’ve done…”

Chaney describes the tune as:

“A much-needed pick-me-up by this point in the record, ‘The Unsatisfied’ is a song written about my early experience as a touring musician and songwriter. It’s a confession of how I felt at the time of writing the song.

I believe that if you want to stand out and create anything original in this life, you’re going to have to take a different route than the other guys. That route is often fraught with peril. Two or three years down the road, now—much has changed about that ‘ol boy, and much remains the same.”

The song showcases a folk-rooted sound, features stellar fiddle, and an upbeat melody that lends a lightheartedness to the tune, matching the folklore-like lyrics.

While “The Unsatisfied” highlights more traditional Appalachian stylings, the rest of the album sounds like Chaney finding a new side of his sound. “Alone?”, officially dubbed the first single from the project, highlights a much more grunge feel, and that’s precisely what Chaney was going for.

He shared that he’s not worried about being classified as a country artist with this album and drew a lot of inspiration from ’90s rock — specifically Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots.

“I’m not concerned with being labeled as ‘country.’ There’s not a lot of music being released right now that is doing much for me — I want to make something I want to listen to.

I wanted to make something that sounded like Ralph Stanley went in and got backed up by Soundgarden. I write what I listen to. And whatever I listen to is going to come out in my music.”

In the Shadow of the Mountain was produced by Duane Lundy at his studio in Lexington, Kentucky. Chaney chose to work with Lundy after bonding over their love for ’90s rock and felt confident that he could help him achieve the desired sound for this album.

“I know plenty of bluegrass guys that could have recorded this for me. But, I wanted to take that string band and folk sound and bring it to a rock producer, to bring that big sound out of these acoustic instruments — [Duane] was about to do that.”

It sounds like this is going to be a stellar project for Chaney, and these two singles he’s shared with the public thus far are a strong start for what’s in store. 2025 is already a great year for country music, and it will be even better with Chaney’s record in the mix come September.
