Chris Stapleton & Miranda Lambert Wrote A Song Called “Somebody Winds Up Pregnant” & We NEED To Hear It

I don’t even really know what this means… but you have my attention.

Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert are quite the dynamic duo. We’ve seen them share the stage a number of times over the years, including when they joined George Strait, Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen for a Texas hurricane benefit, when they teamed up to perform “Maggie’s Song” at the 2021 ACM Awards, and of course, their most recent recorded duet, “A Song To Sing.”

Of course, when the news that they were releasing a song together came out earlier this year, it reminded me of another song that this duo worked on, and let’s just say that the title is a little more head-turning than “A Song To Sing.” A few years ago, it was revealed that Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert have a song registered to BMI (a massive performing rights organization that handles licensing and royalties for songwriters) called “Somebody Winds Up Pregnant”… and I don’t think I’ve been so intrigued with a song title or pair of writers in a long time.

Typically, this wouldn’t be much to write home about, because artists and writers are constantly registering songs for many different reasons. Some of them never even see the light of day, or they wind up on an album for someone else, but this one absolutely has my attention. I mean, Chris and Miranda co-writing a tune with a title like that? It already has the potential for country music ballad of the year based on those facts alone. Or maybe it’s a hard charging twanger about unrelenting love?

Like I said, we already got the groovy “A Song To Sing,” from this incredible country music duo, but with a title like this, how can you just leave it on the shelf?

So that being said… c’mon Chris and Ran. Finish what you started, continue the trend, and release this… the world needs it right now.

“A Song To Sing” Music Video

Pulling inspiration, and accessories, from Kenny and Dolly.

Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton released their very first duet “A Song To Sing” in July, which is super groovy and fun, and finds them reflecting on a timeless love that only gets better with time. And today, they gave it he full music video treatment that will instantly transport you back to the 70’s.

Chris and Miranda have worked together before, specifically on the song “What Am I Gonna Do,” which was the opening track to Chris’ 2023 Higher album and finds him lamenting the end of a relationship and can’t stop thinking about what he’s going to do if he ever moves on from this girl.

“A Song To Sing” was written by Chris and Miranda along with Jesse Frasure and Jenee Fleenor, and calls back to the classic country duets we all know in love in terms of its classic sound and timeless sentiment. It has a cool, throwback sound to it, and certainly has flavors of the Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers classic “Islands in the Stream,” which I appreciate very much.

The lyrics are relatively simple, and it’s obviously inspired by classic country duets we all know and love like the aforementioned Dolly/Kenny hit, as well as duets from Loretta and Conway, George and Tammy and so many others.

Miranda admitted that Kenny and Dolly were obviously a huge inspiration for this duet, which she explained during a conversation with Cody Alan on SiriusXM’s The Highway:

“I had a date with Jesse Frazier, and he randomly reached out to Chris kind of last minute and was like, ‘Hey, you wouldn’t happen to be around today? Me and Miranda are just writing for kind of fun.’ And Chris was available, so he came over, and he actually, Jenee Fleenor, who is an amazing fiddle player, sort of her and Jesse had worked on this track and sort of got this groovy kind of ’70s thing going.

So she wasn’t in the room that day, but her parts really drove this beat, and we wrote two songs that day, but it’s been around for like a couple of years. It just wasn’t time, I guess we couldn’t really figure out what project it fit on or where it should go.”

They cut the song last year with legendary producer Dave Cobb in Savannah, Georgia:

“I mean, I got to just hang in Savannah for a couple of days with the Stapletons and drink some wine and cut a record to channel our inner Kenny and Dolly, you know what I mean.”

The two longtime friends and songwriting partners have a combined 14 GRAMMYs, 33 Country Music Association and 59 Academy of Country Music awards, and have been two of the biggest and most influential acts in the genre for the last 10-15 years. It’s well past time they put out duet, and the fact that this song was produced by the great Dave Cobb makes it that much better.

The music video perfectly captures the feel of the song and brings it to life, which was directed by Running Bear, produced by James Stratakis and filmed at the Brentwood Skate Center near Nashville… you might also recognize Chris’ wife and backup singer Morgane in a gorgeous gold jumpsuit.

The heart shaped disco ball is everything, Miranda’s Farrah Fawcett-inspired hair is gorgeous, and I can’t get enough of the whole vintage look of the actual film and their outfits… but possibly the coolest part about the video is that they actually borrowed jewelry from Rogers’ and Parton’s estates, with Lambert wearing a pair of Parton’s gold clip-on hoop earrings and Stapleton donning a lion necklace of Rogers’.

It’s a subtle and simple touch, but had to have been cool for them to wear and I wouldn’t want to give them back. Miranda’s earrings that she borrowed from Dolly are just perfection…

“A Song To Sing” is currently a single at country radio for Miranda and Chris, and they do this throwback-style SO well, managing to honor the greats who made that decade of country so incredible, while still keeping it fresh and current in 2025.

Make no mistake, that’s incredibly hard to do, but they’re the best of the best in mainstream country and this partnership was long overdue.
