Chelsea repeating history with new ‘Christian Pulisic situation’ as imminent transfer emerges
Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Jamie Gittens in a transfer that bears resemblance to their acquisition of Christian Pulisic. The Premier League club are confident of tying up a move for the Borussia Dortmund winger after initial attempts to land the star prior to the Club World Cub failed to materialise. Gittens, a former Manchester City academy graduate, is keen to make the move to west London following an impressive five-year stint at Signal Iduna Park, breaking into the first team picture in 2022. The 20-year-old kicked off last season in fine form and was arguably Dortmund’s standout performer. However, the appointment of Niko Kovac as manager in January changed the trajectory of Gittens’ season with the pair enduring a strained relationship. As a result, Gittens saw his game time reduced at the tail end of the season, and now Chelsea are hoping to take full advantage of the situation. Discussing the star’s future, European football expert Andy Brassell told talkSPORT’s Trans Europe Express that transfer is similar to Pulisic’s move from Dortmund to Chelsea in 2019. “If we look at Jamie Gittens there’s a huge amount of potential and current quality there,” Brassell said. “He’s someone who is a very direct winger coming off the left hand side. A very mazy dribbler but there’s almost always a shot at the end of it. “He’s someone who scores goals and could score a lot more goals going forward. “But I think we have to look back as well at a season of two halves. He didn’t really get along well with Niko Kovac the Dortmund coach and he’s barely been in the team since Kovac arrived. “So it’s a little bit like the Christian Pulisic situation really when he went to Chelsea all those years ago.” Gittens has found himself frozen out under Niko Kovac Pulisic made the switch from Dortmund to Chelsea but it didn’t work out as expectedGetty Chelsea saw their opening bid for the England Under-21 international rejected by the Bundesliga giants but the Blues are expected to return to the negotiating table with a second offer. And it appears that Gittens will likely have his bags already packed and ready to go if recent events are anything to go by. “On the first transfer deadline day going back a couple of weeks, he was waiting at Dortmund’s training ground with every expectation his move to Chelsea was going to be confirmed,” Brassell explained. “The club’s were a little bit apart on the fee. I wonder how much Dortmund can realistically ask for him? “The fact that you’re talking about a player with uncommon ability but a player who has run aground and it really suits Dortmund to sell him at the moment. “Dortmund have dug their heels in over a fee, they’re looking for around 65million euros (£55m). Chelsea have got them themselves up to 55m (£46.8m).
