Charles Wesley Godwin Delivers Flawless Performance Of “Hardwood Floors” In New ‘Hometown Sessions’

In a country scene that’s seemingly bursting at the seams with talent, it’s hard to choose who’s the most underrated artist out there today. In a country scene that’s seemingly bursting at the seams with talent, it’s hard to choose who’s the most underrated artist out there today. With names like Wyatt Flores, Dylan Gossett, 49 Winchester and more continually being named on top of many lists, I’d argue that there’s one name that has flown under the radar consistently: Charles Wesley Godwin.

With three albums’ worth of what can only be described as brilliance, the “All Again” singer has proven time and again why he’s one of today’s premier songwriters and voices in the genre. Nothing has showcased this better than the new series of videos he’s uploaded on his YouTube channel, the “Hometown Sessions.”

First announced back on July 9th, Godwin has been rolling out the series of live performances shot at the Metropolitan Theater in his hometown of Morgantown, West Virginia, which promised reworked versions of fan-favorites, “Strawberry Queen” and “All Again,” new-releases, “Lonely Mountain Town” and “It’s The Little Things” and even a cover of Tyler Childers’ legendary “Whitehouse Road.”

In an Instagram post announcing the project, Godwin said:

Earlier this year, the Allegheny High and I worked with Justin Clough to film some performance videos for y’all at The Metropolitan Theater, one of my favorite venues in my hometown of Morgantown, West Virginia. We chose some of our favorite songs to perform live, and even reworked a few, like this version of ‘She Don’t Love Me Anymore.’

After coming in hot with the aforementioned “Whitehouse Road,” Godwin decided to bring the heat once again yesterday with the most recent video in the series — none other than “Hardwood Floors.”

If you’re a fan of Godwin, you’ll be quick to recognize that “Hardwood Floors” has been a setlist staple and ultimately one of his most popular tracks, racking up 32 million streams on Spotify alone. The song, written independently by the West Virginia native, was released on his debut album, Seneca, back in 2019.

As for the performance and video itself, it’s nothing short of perfection. Despite the noticeable lack of Ben Townsend’s fiddle in comparison to the studio version, I’d argue it’s even better. There’s no denying that Godwin’s band, aptly named the Allegheny High, is one of the tightest groups in the genre, and it’s showcased brilliantly here. From Al Torrence on electric guitar to Amico Demuzio making the strings dance on steel, everyone is firing on all cylinders. There’s few songs that simultaneously make you want to run through a brick wall and burn down a dance floor, but this one certainly does.

Couple the brilliant performance with some masterful cinematography from Justin Clough, and you have yourself one of the finest live performance videos of the year. If you’re a fan of Godwin, you won’t want to miss this one.
