Just gotta laugh it off.
It’s safe to say that Bubba Wallace is one of the most polarizing figures in the NASCAR Cup Series. The driver of the #23 car for 23XI Racing is the only black driver in the Cup Series, and has found himself at the center of his fair share of controversies over his career.
Of course there was the “noose” incident at Talladega a few years ago, when it was reported that a noose had been found in his garage stall but it turned out it was actually just a garage door pull. The whole saga resulted in Bubba receiving quite a bit of hate for what people saw as perpetuating a hate crime hoax, even though he wasn’t the one who reported the supposed “noose” in the first place.
Bubba has also been open about his struggled with anxiety and depression, which in the past has resulted in some interviews in which he’s come off as rude or short with the media, something that obviously only provides ammo for his critics who already don’t like him.
And then of course there are his on-track incidents. Back in 2022, Bubba was suspended after intentionally wrecking Kyle Larson at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. And just this past weekend, he was once again on the receiving end of a lot of criticism after he apparently didn’t realize that he was three wide at Daytona and tried to change lanes, resulting in a massive crash.
The result of all this is a driver who’s on the receiving end of a lot of online hate, and obviously many attribute it to racism as he’s the only black driver in the Cup Series.
But a lot of the hate he receives also stems from things that are completely untrue.
In this day and age, it’s unfortunately all too easy for fake news to spread across social media, and too often it’s shared before being fact checked. It’s something Bubba’s had to deal with during his career, like the completely false story about him wanting to ban the white flag from NASCAR for being “racist.”
It’s total nonsense, and originated with a site that shares parodies and satire, but unfortunately too many people shared it before doing any research and now there are plenty of folks out there who think Bubba Wallace actually wants to ban the white flag from NASCAR.
During an episode of The Teardown podcast with Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi, Bubba was asked how he deals with these fake stories – and he was quick to laugh it off:
“I can’t even believe you have this piece of white paper next to me. Get it away from me…
I can’t win… The things I’ve said to myself is way worse than what anybody else could say to me. I mean, that’s not a way to live, but it makes those dumb-ss scenarios a little bit easier.
But yeah, you can’t win. It’s incredible the lengths that people will go to to create up the false scenarios. At this point it’s just comical.”
Bubba admits that he hasn’t been on Facebook in years, and calls it a waste of time to argue with them:
“You’re arguing behind a bunch of egg emojis… It’s just, at the end of the day, it’s sad that we have to talk about this, but it’s there.
Can I not go out and focus on winning a championship? No, we gotta worry about fake sh-t that’s unfortunately there. It is what it is.”
Sounds like he’s got the right attitude about it.
And just to be clear: No, Bubba Wallace does not want to ban the white flag.
