The former U.S. Open champion can’t wait to have President Trump in attendance at the Ryder Cup.
Bryson DeChambeau is one of the most popular golfers in the entire world. Even though he plays in the LIV Tour, he’s managed to expand his reach and fandom through his very entertaining YouTube golf efforts. He’s one of the only current pros that has really taken advantage of the popularity of the sport online.
DeChambeau also backed up his energy and outspokenness with some respectable golf, which never hurts. He played well enough to automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup team, and as he explained in his press conference from earlier today, he’s been looking forward to the Team U.S.A. vs. Team Europe showdown at Bethpage Black for quite some time:
“When I missed the Olympics because of COVID – I got COVID – and wasn’t able to represent my country, that was a pretty big shot to the heart. Playing in team events my whole entire life…. it’s all I wanted to do growing up.
Then being on the Ryder Cup for a winning team and a losing team, experiencing both the highs and the lows, and then missing in Rome… this has put something in my stomach that’s kind of made it a mission project for me.”
Starting tomorrow and running all the way through the end of the weekend, 12 of America’s best golfers will battle with Europe’s top 12 men in a match-play, team-oriented competition. It’s a bi-annual event that gets even the casual golf fan fired up. Who would pass up the opportunity to watch two countries, and all of that respective country pride, go at one another?
I’ll tell you won’t be missing the action: President Donald Trump. He’s expected to be in attendance on Friday of the Ryder Cup, which is being held in Farmingdale, New York:
I would imagine the POTUS being there will give the players – and the American golf fans in attendance – a helpful boost of energy.
Bryson DeChambeau, who is actually friends with Trump and serves as the Chair on The President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, thinks that the President being there for the Friday competition will give the upper hand to the American team:
“I hope he’ll inspire us to victory. I think he’ll be a great force for us to get a lot of people on our side. I think it’ll be interesting and exciting to see how the crowd and everybody reacts. It’s going to be an electric environment.”
There’s even a rumor that President Trump will walk out onto the first tee with the first American group. Now to be clear, that’s a rumor… simply reckless speculation at this point. But if that happens? USA! USA! USA!
And I just want to quickly mention again that the Ryder Cup is one of the best events in all of sports, and if you’ve never watched it, you’ve got to give it a shot (and root on America) this weekend. Trust me… if the golf tournament is good enough for the POTUS, it’s good enough for you.
Oh, and Robert MacIntyre of Team Europe may have given the United States team a little bit of bulletin board material. He said that President Trump is “just another spectator” in his time with the media:
