Last night, the talented Briley King, wife of the talented, Marcus King, announced she will release an official cover of “The Night the Lights Went Out In Georgia.” Her clip of an impromptu backstage rendition of it has gone super viral on TikTok, and many fans have been asking for her to put out a studio cut.

Well, ask and you shall receive, because it will be out very soon, on October 1st, that will feature Ella Langley and the Marcus King Band, which she shared during a live performance at the Grand Ole Opry last night.

But it wasn’t necessarily her performance that had people talking… it was her outfit. Briley posts about her fashion inspiration and outfit choices quite often on social media, and even owns her own hat brand, Little Brid Trucking. Her style is certainly eccentric and quirky, which I can appreciate in many aspects. It’s hard to argue that she doesn’t look amazing on most occasions. But the lampshade-inspired dress Briley wore onstage last night was a choice, to put it mildly. I’ve never seen an outfit like this before, and I guess she was trying to pay homage to the lines where it says the “lights went out in Georgia,” but fans on social media certainly were not “here for it,” as the kids say these days.

Apparently it’s a “homemade Hermès”?

Obviously, fashion is subjective, and I’m sure there are some people who will love the daring choice, which also appears on the song cover art:

@americansongwriter Live from the Grand Ole Opry TONIGHT (9/22), Marcus King and Briley King took to the stage to cover the viral Reba song, “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia,” resurging right now due to Briley’s recent rendition on socials. #brileyking #marcusking #thenightthelightswentoutingeorgia #fyp #grandoleopry @Briley King @Marcus King ♬ original sound – American Songwriter

But of course, the comments section remains undefeated:

“What is her outfit?”

“Everyone who let her go out like that should be charged with a crime!”

“Is that a Christmas tree skirt?”

“WHAT is she wearing.”

“I love her unique and crazy style but the lamp shade is pmo.”

“What is she WEARING.”

“I really enjoy Briley’s singing but what is that outfit?”

“Why she got on a lampshade?”

“Why is she wearing a lamp shade?”

“There it is. I couldn’t find my missing lampshade.”

“What in the lampshade is that?

“It’s a rodeo clown.”

“It’s the lamp from ‘A Christmas Story'”

“She got you talking about her though didn’t she?”

Let’s just say, the song is better than the outfit and I think her wearing it actually kind of distracts from the performance, but it’s clearly the artistic choice that worked for her. At at the end of the day, it’s one performance and some album art… fans will care much more about the song being available.
