What a way to kick off the season.
Vanderbilt football has been the laughingstock of the SEC for a long time now. Even legendary Alabama coach Nick Saban threw some shade at Vandy last year, saying it was the only stadium in the conference that wasn’t an intimidating environment for opponents:
“The only place you’re going to play in the SEC that’s not hard to play, Vanderbilt. When you play at Vanderbilt, you have more fans there than they have. And that’s no disrespect to them, it’s the truth.”
But that was before the Commodores knocked off then-#1 ranked Alabama in one of the biggest upsets of the 2024 season, and then managed to beat Auburn on the road and rival Georgia Tech in the Birmingham Bowl to secure their first winning season since 2013.
The turnaround was thanks in no small part to the culture shift that head coach Clark Lea is trying to bring to the program, as well as the addition of transfer QB Diego Pavia. The former New Mexico State quarterback has ruffled some feathers with his trash talking, but he’s also managed to back it up with his play on the field as he’s seemingly brought a new swagger to a program that never really seemed to think they could win on any given Saturday.
But apparently Diego isn’t the only member of the family who likes to do some trash talking…
The Commodores and Pavia opened the season here in Nashville this weekend with a 45-3 win over Charleston Southern in front of a packed crowd at FirstBank Stadium, a venue that usually isn’t filled with fans of the home team.
Unfortunately though, neither of the quarterback’s brothers got to see the end of the game – because they both managed to get themselves arrested during the blowout win.
According to WSMV, Vanderbilt University police were called to the stadium around 9:20 PM for reports of a belligerent fan who was throwing food and annoying others around him. Officers identified the fan as Javier Pavia, the 25-year old brother of the Vandy QB, who according to the police report was “intoxicated, staggering, with an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath.”
Javier was asked to leave the stadium, but refused. Officers then tried to place him under arrest, but Javier reportedly began resisting officers as they placed him into the cop car.
Apparently Javier’s brother, 26-year old Roel Pavia, saw that his brother was being arrested and tried to intervene, which obviously never ends well. Roel reportedly confronted the officers and pushed one in the chest to keep them from arresting his brother, which shockingly didn’t work. The brother then realized that he was about to get arrested himself and took off running, but police were able to catch him in a parking lot across from the stadium and took him into custody as well.
Both brothers were charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest and public intoxication, and Roel Pavia was also charged with a felony count of assaulting an officer.
