Even the most mundane, non-political quote can cause an uproar in 2025.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise through, eh? The temperature in politics and the hypersensitivity in today’s culture has continued to creep up and up in the past decade or so. A lot of people will point fingers at President Trump, but it’s messy on both sides of the aisle. And now, an NFL coach saying something that’s basically right down the middle politically is landing him in hot water.

John Harbaugh has been the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens since 2008. He’s lead his team to over 180 wins in his 17-year tenure, and he’s only had two losing seasons in that span. Harbaugh is widely considered as one of the best coaches in the league, and he’s got a Super Bowl trophy to prove it (to play devil’s advocate, some might argue he should have more than just one Lombardi).

Ahead of the 2025-26 season, Harbaugh is looking to get his team prepped for yet another deep postseason run. That’s what he should have been asked about during today’s brief media availability, but instead, a reporter decided to throw out a “gotchya” question about Harbaugh’s politics.

The media member brought up that Harbaugh had recently visited the White House with his family (quirky brother Jim Harbaugh included), and pointed out that the POTUS had previously said some “denigrating things about Baltimore.” Harbaugh was then asked as a “prominent representative of Baltimore” how he viewed his recent trip to Washington D.C. to visit President Donald Trump, and the NFL head coach wasn’t exactly thrilled about the question.

Nonetheless, he laughed in his face, gave it some thought, and responded with this:

“I would frame the question like, ‘You got the chance to go visit with the president man, what was that experience like?’ It was amazing. It was awesome. And I promise you I root for our president. You know, I want our president to be successful just like I want my quarterback to be successful and I want my team to be successful.

It was an amazing experience. It’s not often you get invited and you get a chance to do something like that as a family. We were there, my daughter was there, Jim’s daughters were there. My mom and dad were there. My mom… seeing how President Trump treated her was really meaningful.”

Nothing wrong with that answer, right? Right?

Some social media users didn’t see any problem with an American citizen saying they were rooting for the president, and thus the United States of America:

But of course, many others were outraged by Harbaugh’s comments. Utterly incensed by the fact that someone would wish the leader of our country, and in many ways, the free world, to be successful in that endeavor.

With all the controversy swirling around Donald Trump right now (when has there not been any?), many dismissed the Baltimore coach’s comments and reacted with some very ugly replies:
