Following their investigation into the motorcycle accident that claimed the life of ex-Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds on August 20, the Atlanta Police Department’s most recent findings have determined that the musician was at fault for the crash.

According to a report by Atlanta News First, the police report once again stated that Hinds collided with a BMW SUV at the Memorial Drive and Boulevard intersection. In fact, the circumstances behind the accident remained the same, but the blame was placed solely on Hinds because he was allegedly “going between 63 and 68 mpg, which is roughly twice the speed limit at the crash site.”

Police said investigators were able to calculate Hinds’ speed by reviewing video footage of the intersection that “clearly depicts” what happened. The report confirms what a pair of witnesses told police that the guitarist was “driving fast.”

And while the facts of the crash largely remained the same, there remain some conflicting statements that cast some doubt on whether the SUV’s driver had the green light when she tried to turn from Memorial to Boulevard. Police said the driver “was positive” she had the green, but a witness also told police that the light was red at the time of the accident. Regardless of Hinds’ speed, if she failed to observe the traffic signal, that should place some of the blame her way too, wouldn’t it?!

Responding officers found Hinds “breathing and moving with visible injuries to his head, arms and torso” in the immediate aftermath of the accident. He was then transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was unresponsive and he succumbed to his injuries. He was just 51 years old.

Of course, we will always remember Hinds as an original member of Mastodon since its creation in 2000. Over the years, he became an integral part of the band’s unique sound and style. Having been featured on every one of the band’s albums, it all came as a shock when he was summarily kicked out of the band back in March.

In the weeks that followed his ousting, Hinds did not hold back on his frustration and anger toward his former bandmates.

Despite the falling out, his ex-bandmates joined in on a march through part of Atlanta that celebrated Hinds’ life.
