Aston Villa make official complaint as Premier League explain why goal not given
Aston Villa confirmed they have made a formal complaint after a goal they didn’t get given led to them missing out on Champions League football. Morgan Rogers had the ball in the net for Aston Villa after Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir seemed to spill a Harry Maguire header back, but referee Thomas Bramall thought it was a foul. The ball came loose and Rodgers latched onSky SkyHe put it in the back of the net but the whistle had already gone, meaning VAR couldn’t overturn it[/caption] Rogers fumed and so did the whole Villa team, while Villans manager Unai Emery was irate on the touchline. VAR did not review the incident with the Premier League explaining: “The referee’s call was a free kick to Manchester United with Bayindir deemed to be in control of the ball before Rogers gained possession. “The whistle was blown by the referee before the ball entered the goal, therefore the incident was not reviewable by the VAR.” And then, just moments later, it was 1-0 the other way as Bruno Fernandes set up Amad Diallo for the eventual opener. Christian Eriksen then settled a 2-0 win with a penalty, with the Rogers strike a hugely costly moment for Villa. Defeat means they miss out on Champions League football next season, with Chelsea’s win over Nottingham Forest pushing them down and helping Newcastle into the final berth in fifth despite the fact the Magpies lost at home to Everton. The club has since confirmed via social media it has written to the PGMOL over concerns Bramall was not experienced enough to officiate a fixture of such magnitude. “With such high stakes surrounding today’s fixture, the club believe a more experienced referee should have been appointed,” the statement read. “Of the 10 referees to officiate across the Premier League today, Mr. Bramall was the 2nd least experienced. “The decision to disallow Morgan Rogers’ goal, which would have given the club a 1-0 lead with 17 minutes remaining in the match, was a major contributing factor to the club not qualifying for the Champions League. VAR exists to ensure that these types of situations receive the scrutiny they deserve. Unfortunately, the technology was not allowed to serve its purpose. “Ultimately, we acknowledge that the outcome for us will not change, but we believe that it is important to address the selection methodology to ensure that high stakes matches are treated as such with regards to officiating and to ensure that the implemented VAR technology is allowed to be effective.” Bramall had been taking charge of his 30th Premier League fixture having made his top-flight debut in August 2022. The 35-year-old official previously oversaw Villa’s 3-0 win at Southampton last month. Meanwhile, captain John McGinn branded the decision ‘incredible’ following the final whistle. Speaking to TNT Sports, he exclaimed: “The decision is incredible. Everyone wanted the correct decision when VAR was implemented. In rugby, if a try is given then it can be overturned if it’s wrong. Rogers couldn’t believe it Neither could his manager “I know the rule but it’s hard on us. For him to blow his whistle at that point, it’s really, really tough to handle. “It’s a really costly one. We only needed a point to reach the Champions League.” Responding to the scenes, former Premier League referee Mike Dean was shocked. “No chance [Bayindir had full control of the ball],” he said. “He’s got to keep the ball, it’s hit one hand and then it’s come out of his own accord, he’s done that himself. “The ball is free and the attacker’s got every right to go for the ball. “He hasn’t got control and I think the referee thinks he has, but for me he hasn’t and the goal should be given. “If the whistle went before the ball hit the back of the net it won’t be given.” Despite a sixth-place finish and a heartbreaking end to the season, Villa have enjoyed a memorable campaign. They made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, claiming wins over Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. They also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
