Maybe it’s a little too early in the morning for the American crowd at the Ryder Cup?

As the bi-annual, team match play tournament got started yesterday between Team U.S.A. and Team Europe, golf fans were excited to watch the competition heat up at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. What’s not to love about the United States pitting their top 12 guys against the best dozen golfers hailing from Europe?

The only problem? The European team started flexing their muscles early, and the likes of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm lead Team Europe to a commanding 5 1/2 to 3 1/2 lead over Team U.S.A. after the first day of play. Not even an Air Force One flyover and the presence of President Trump could get the United States to rally yesterday:

In case you aren’t savvy on the history of the Ryder Cup, the tournament site goes back and forth between America and Europe. And home field advantage is a very real thing. Since 1979, when Europe officially formed as a team in the event, the “home team” has only lost four times. Team U.S.A. has won in Europe twice, and the Europeans have upset the Americans four times – most recently at Medinah Country Club in 2012.

Unfortunately, it looks as though Team Europe could be headed towards another away victory over the American team (hoping the ol’ reverse jinx kicks in because I said that). They already boast a 3-point lead from the first day of competition, and they have gotten off to a great start in the second day of foursome play.

And in a shocking turn of events, it certainly feels like Europe has done all they can to take the American crowd out of it. All you heard about going into the Ryder Cup being held in New York was that the New Yorkers were really going to bring the energy and fire up Team U.S.A.. But that hasn’t been true thus far.

That’s really hurting the whole “home field advantage” side of things. When the tournament is in Europe, the crowd comes up with sprawling, orchestrated chants to support their team. In America, the U.S. patrons in attendance – at least at Bethpage Black this year – seem to only have the “USA! USA! USA!” chant down. To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with that. Hearing Americans shout that together never gets old.

However, it was disconcerting seeing the American crowd actively, for a lack of a better term, suck at trying out some new, more creative chants this morning. This video is now going viral online, and shows American fans 1) not doing a good job adapting to a “We Will Rock You/Scottie Scheffler” mash up and 2) seemingly being uninterested in taking directions.

To be frank, it’s embarrassing:

It’s STOMP, STOMP, CLAP people. Not that hard.

As a red-blooded American, I’ll keep the faith in Team U.S.A. until the very end. I’m hoping they can turn it around in the Ryder Cup, and there’s still a lot of golf to be played. But when you see both the players out on the course and the fans cheering them on struggling to get it together… an American Ryder Cup win might not be in the cards. The post American Fans At Ryder Cup Embarrassingly Fail To Get Simple “We Will Rock You” Chant Going first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
