Something only Willie could have gotten away with.

When it comes to legends in country music, there aren’t many who have made their mark like Willie Nelson. From his days running around with fellow outlaw country legends like Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson to his battles with the IRS, and of course his well-known affinity for the green stuff, we’ve gotten some wild stories of Willie’s adventures over the years.

Willie’s obviously done some wild stuff in his day. But one of the wildest may be the time he found himself on the roof of the White House smoking a joint with the president’s son.

He first revealed that he smoked at the White House back in his 1988 autobiography, where he said that he was let on the roof by an “anonymous servant” at the White House, describing it as being up there with “a beer in one hand and a fat Austin Torpedo in the other.”

But years later, Willie confessed that it was actually President Jimmy Carter’s son who let him on the roof to smoke a joint, with the former president himself confirming that he knew it was his son Chip all along:

“When Willie Nelson wrote his autobiography he confessed that he smoked pot in the White House and he says that his companion was one of the servants at the White House… actually it was one of my sons.”

And with Farm Aid gearing up for its 40th anniversary this weekend, Willie sat down with Kaitlan Collins of CNN where he was once again asked about the legendary story of him blazing on the White House roof back in 1979.

When asked whose idea it was to go to the roof, Willie blamed it on the president’s son:

“I think it was his. I’m gonna blame him for it, anyway. Of course it had to be a lot of his, because he was the only one who knew how to get up there.”

But he also admits that it was both of their ideas to spark one while they were up there. And while he knows it was illegal to take a joint to the White House, it doesn’t sound like he has any regrets:

“Oh we had a ball.”

Only Willie.

Willie Nelson Blasts AI Posts Claiming He’s On His Death Bed

I don’t know how many times we have to say it, but: Don’t believe everything you read online.

With the advance of AI, and as it becomes increasingly harder to tell AI-generated photos and videos from the real thing, it’s more important than ever to fact check things that you see on social media. And it seems that Willie Nelson is doing his own-fact checking of posts about his health.

The country music legend recently had to cancel a stop on his Outlaw Music Festival, but it had nothing to do with his health. Severe weather rolled through the Thunder Ridge Nature Arena in Missouri and damaged the festival’s equipment and instruments, forcing the show featuring Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and more to cancel their show:

“The Outlaw Music Festival’s 10th Anniversary concert event scheduled for July 1, 2025 at Lucky Star Amphitheater in El Reno, Oklahoma has been canceled due to unforeseeable circumstances. An extreme weather event on the evening of June 29th in Ridgedale, Missouri at Thunder Ridge Nature Arena produced heavy rains and high winds, forcing the crowd to evacuate.

Unfortunately, much of the Outlaw Music Festival’s equipment and artists’ instruments were damaged and waterlogged, making their condition difficult to assess in time to accurately and safely use for tomorrow’s show. The potential damage has halted the festival production as they recover and replace what’s necessary for the tour to resume. The tour looks forward to resuming in Austin, Texas on July 4.”

But a fake post that made its rounds on social media claimed that Willie is facing a far more serious problem than some waterlogged guitars.

According to the post, which has gone around several times now and is usually accompanied by an AI-generated photo of Willie in the hospital, the country music legend had to be rushed to the hospital after collapsing. The post claims that Willie’s son, Lukas Nelson, made the announcement that his father was in “serious but stable condition” and that doctors have revealed that “the coming hours will be critical.”

The only problem is that it’s all bullsh-t. And Willie himself confirmed that it’s fake news, clapping back at the viral post when it went around over the 4th of July holiday:

“LOL what a joke – anyways see y’all at 4th of July picnic tomorrow.”

Even at 92 years old, Willie’s still kicking – and laughing about the wild stuff he’s done. The post Willie Nelson Recalls Smoking A Joint On The Roof Of The White House With President Jimmy Carter’s Son: “We Had A Ball” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
