Put on your tinfoil hats friends… it’s time for a Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce engagement conspiracy.
In case you missed the news – and I’m really not sure how you could’ve considering it’s been everywhere online – Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and global music superstar Taylor Swift officially announced their engagement today. The post effectively broke the internet, and the announcement has garnered just shy of 20 million likes on Instagram… and it’s only been up for five hours or so:
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
Truly a storybook, couldn’t-be-more-romantic ending to the will-they-won’t-they engagement headlines.
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift first started dating in the summer of 2023, and it all began when Travis attended her Eras Tour concert at Arrowhead Stadium and tried to give her a patented Swifties friendship bracelet. The football player’s attempt to meet with Swift backstage to give her the bracelet, which had his phone number on it, was unsuccessful.
But things really took off when Kelce discussed it on the New Heights podcast with his brother, Jason. Following that clip going viral, the two high-profile individuals made contact, the “Love Story” singer attended a plethora of Kansas City Chiefs games (much to the chagrin of NFL fans) and the rest, as they say, is history.
That’s all fine and dandy, but you aren’t here to learn about Kelce and Swift’s blossoming relationship and eventual engagement. You are here to learn more the conspiracy theory that has quickly arose as a result of the huge Kelce-and-Swift-to-be-married news. I’m typically not one to spread rumors and wild theories, but I’ll make an exception for this one.
Basically, there’s this platform called Polymarket that’s most easily described as a predictions market that’s based on American cryptocurrency. Various predictions are featured on Polymarket, like “Who Will Trump Pardon In 2025?” to the prediction closer to the topic at hand: “Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce engaged in 2025?” Now I’m not an expert in Polymarket, but it basically works like the stock market, and people are able to wager cryptocurrency on future events.
What a world we live in, eh?
But just like the actual stock market, it seems like Polymarket could be subject to its own unique brand of insider trading… people close to the celebrities that people are betting on. Some internet sleuths noticed that a Polymarket user by the name of “RomanticPaul” started hammering Taylor Swift to be engaged yesterday afternoon around 3 p.m., around 21 hours before the actual announcement hit social media. His buy in doubled the price from 25% to almost 50%, and the timing of his investment could not have been better.
It’s even led people to wonder… did “RomanticPaul” know something?
