Waylon Jennings Once Told Conway Twitty That He Attracted More Ugly Women To His Shows Than He’d Ever Seen Before

Could always count on Waylon Jennings to keep it real.

The outlaw country legend was notorious for speaking his mind and letting you know exactly where he stood – like the time he walked out on an interview with The Late, Late Show because another guest was cutting into his time, or when he infamously walked out in the middle of the “We Are The World” recording session because he said he was “tired of everybody patting everybody on the back.”

He also had strong feelings about his fellow country stars, once joking that Willie Nelson wasn’t a real outlaw and that the most outlaw thing he’d ever done was “double park on Music Row,” and ripping the Nashville country music machine for not wanting to hear ideas from artists.

One thing about Waylon, though, was that he obviously had a pretty great sense of humor – and that brutal honesty mixed with Waylon’s wry humor gave us some incredible quotes.

In one hilarious 1988 interview with SPIN, Waylon recalled the time that a promoter booked him for a show with Conway Twitty. Because of some confusion, Waylon ended up appearing on a show that was originally supposed to feature fellow country star Dottie West – so Waylon’s name wasn’t on the show ahead of time:

“We were booked one time up north here. This guy that booked us, and this was about 15 years ago, he sent me to Syracuse, where Dottie was supposed to be, and he sent her to Rhode Island, where I was supposed to be.”

And…well, Waylon wasn’t exactly impressed with the crowd. Or more specifically, the women in the crowd:

“Well, we got up there in Syracuse, and I was there with Conway Twitty, and I have never seen that many ugly women congregatin’ in all my life, and I told him so.

I said ‘Boy, you do draw an ugly class of women.’”

Conway tried to remind Waylon that they were both on the show, but Waylon shot back that his name wasn’t on the bill:

“He said, ‘Well, you were booked on the show, too.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, but I wasn’t advertised.’”

Amazing.

Of course Conway Twitty was well known for driving the women wild. There’s nobody who put out more horny country music than Conway with songs like “Tight Fittin’ Jeans” and “I’d Love To Lay You Down.” But apparently Waylon wasn’t exactly impressed with the quality of women that those songs attracted.

It may have been a joke, but it’s hilarious to think about a country artist saying this today and everybody trying to cancel them. Imagine George Strait telling Garth Brooks that his fans are ugly. The backlash would be insane (but hilarious).

Unfortunately we don’t have Waylon around to drop gems like that anymore, so most of the time we’re stuck with sanitized interviews that don’t really tell us anything anyway. It’s a shame, because Waylon left us with some all-time quotes.

While he’s not around to do interviews anymore, we did recently get the good news that Waylon’s son, Shooter Jennings, would be releasing three albums of previously-recorded, entirely unheard Waylon Jennings music, starting this fall. Hopefully even the ugly women who went to Conway Twitty concerts are able to enjoy it.
