Never skip a Tyler cover.

These days, it’s hard to have a conversation about the state of country music without bringing up the name Tyler Childers. Beyond his legendary discography that contains the likes of “Feathered Indians,” “Lady May,” “In Your Love,” “Nose On The Grindstone” and his latest viral hit, “Bitin’ List,” the Kentucky native has influenced a countless number of today’s hottest alt. country stars, ranging from Zach Bryan, Wyatt Flores, Charles Wesley Godwin and more.

With seven studio albums filled with nothing but gold, six certified platinum singles and a whole bunch of underrated deep cuts, Childers has risen to God-like status in today’s independent country scene. This, of course, is for good reason. In a time (especially during Purgatory’s release in 2017) where mainstream country music has become so homogenized, safe and, quite frankly, bad, Childers breathed life into the genre with world-class storytelling, classic instrumentation and a tangible edge to his style.

As we all know, Childers’ rise to fame was far from an overnight endeavor. Though he broke out more commercially over the past five or so years, the “All Your’n” singer has been cuttin’ teeth (pun intended) for nearly two decades at this point. After dropping out a semester into college at Western Kentucky University, Childers took up odd jobs while continuing to perform all around the state.

During this time, we received early clips such as the legendary “Jersey Giant” that still remains unreleased, an early version of “Shake The Frost” before it found its way onto Live on Red Barn Radio I & II and “Harvest” before it would be released on his debut album, Bottles and Bibles, in 2011.

One clip that has never quite made the rounds like the rest of Childers’ early work is his killer medley of Son House’s “Grinnin’ in Your Face” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” all the way back in August 2011 at the V Club in Huntington, West Virginia, just two months before the release of Bottles and Bibles.

“Rolling in the Deep” hardly needs an introduction. Being one of Adele’s signature hits, the track became the first song since “We Are The World” in 1986 to win Record, Song and Best Short Form Music Video at the 53rd Grammy Awards in 2011. Couple that with over 2 billion streams on Spotify alone, platinum status in well over a dozen countries and a Top 100 placement in Rolling Stones’ Top 500 Songs of all Time list, and you have yourself one of the biggest hits of the 21st century.

As for “Grinnin’ in Your Face,” it’s a bit of a deep cut. Being a prominent member of the Delta blues movement in the early 20th century, Son House recorded the track towards the end of his career in 1965. Although fairly obscure from a mainstream perspective, House and by extension his bigger hits, remain an important part of the history of the blues near the Delta.

Though the two tracks on their surface seem fairly far apart given the artists and their respective time periods, Childers does a brilliant job blending them together. Taking the bluesy elements present on “Grinnin’ in Your Face” and leading them straight into his rendition of “Rolling in the Deep” works so much better than it has any right to, thanks in part to his raw vocals that became so synonymous with his early sound.

I’m sure everyone gathered there that day had no idea they were witnessing the birth of one of country music’s living legends, but it was more than apparent that the talent was there from the start.
