This girl’s got a point.

Colter Wall is known for many things: he’s a country music traditionalist, a real-life cowpoke, a poetic storyteller… the list goes on. And among those is that he’s penned one of the best murder ballads in the country genre, “Kate McCannon.”

Found on Colter Wall’s 2017 self-titled sophomore record, the tune is one that fans are guaranteed to belt out as he sings about shooting his wife dead after finding her with another man. The murder aspect of the ballad happens in the song’s last lines, with the build-up really taking its time. Because of the stark ending of the song, detailing how he took her life, the song is shocking and addictive to the ears.

After the song’s release, Colter Wall once shared during a backstage interview at Tønder Festival that he was compelled to write a murder ballad because it hooks every listener and captivates fans no matter what genre they are drawn to.

“For one thing, I think death and murder are always pretty good themes for the telling of a good story, you know. It’s why you see it so much in books and in TV and stuff. I think it’s immediately captivating to a certain degree because it’s such an extreme thing. You know, everybody dies, right? So it affects everybody.”

In the story of Kate McCannon, the repercussions of her actions were extreme. The man who shot her could have easily broken up with her, but that’s the part of what makes the story so compelling—the extreme reaction to an act that so many people have been caught in before.

There’s no denying that “Kate McCannon” is one of Colter Wall’s most beloved songs, and while the story is extreme, no one has ever questioned the fact that the man behind the gun might have been wrong.

That is, until Colter Wall was met with a sassy nine-year-old a few years ago who told him that the punishment he wrote about was too extreme. A video recently uploaded to YouTube, but it looks like it was filmed years ago, most likely 2018 based on Wall’s appearance and the location being Charlottesville. But in the video, a little girl tells Colter what the character should have done after finding Kate McCannon unfaithful.

“Why did Kate McCannon die? He could have just dumped her.”

Wall chuckles and gives it to her, saying she’s not wrong.

“Yeah, that’s an excellent point. That’s an excellent point. I guess then the story wouldn’t be quite as good. Of course, she’s not real.”

The little girl then shares a hilarious note about something her mother told her, implying that Kate McCannon could have had this physical trait.

“My mom said never trust blue-haired girls! But my cousin has blue hair, so you know…”

HA. Kids man… You never know what’s going to come out of their mouths.

While life hopefully does not imitate art with this tale, boy, is it good to see a young girl like this connecting to Colter Wall’s music. This girl has taste, and I’m sure she will grow up with that same penchant for this style of great country music.

Before you go, fire up “Kate McCannon.”
