Boy, is it good to hear a new song from John Prine playing through my speakers. It’s been five years since we lost one of the greatest songwriters of our generation, John Prine. John captivated fans throughout his career with his guitar and simple yet poignant messages that evoked complex emotions. He didn’t need fancy bells and whistles to create a beautiful moment, and he helped shape some of the great songwriters today.

This year, the Prine estate is gifting fans with some unreleased tunes, keeping his legacy alive and ensuring he continues to inspire more aspiring songwriters. For its 30th anniversary of Lost Dogs + Mixed Blessings, the album will be released on vinyl for the first time since its original release. With it comes five previously unreleased demos and alternate takes. The record’s reissue will be available via Oh Boy Records on September 12th.

Prine first released his acclaimed studio album Lost Dogs + Mixed Blessings in 1995. Produced by Howie Epstein of the rock band Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, who also produced his 1991 Grammy Award-winning record, The Missing Years. Although Lost Dogs + Mixed Blessings is one of Prine’s lesser-known records, true fans adore the songwriting featured throughout the tracklist and music critics rave about the storytelling.

Leading up to the release of the 30th anniversary edition, fans were gifted with an unreleased song from the record’s studio sessions. The vault was opened and gave fans a new single titled “Hey Ah Nothin.’”

The song builds on the witty and rich lyrics found throughout this record, with an upbeat folk song that talks about change and encourages speaking up for yourself. Prine’s simple lyrics are highlighted in this song, with many lines rhyming. The simplicity of the song’s words can be interpreted in many ways.

“If you concentrate just like you can’t control your appetite, real good
Be careful of the things you do and make sure no one’s watching you, feel good
If anyone can reassess the sum of this еntire mess, we could

I said, ‘Hеy
Ah, nothin'”

In conjunction with the song’s release, an animated music video was also released, created by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard.

Additional releases fans can expect on the rerelease of Lost Dogs + Mixed Blessings include alternate versions of “Ain’t Hurting Nobody” and “Quit Hollerin’ At Me,” acoustic versions of “All The Way With You” and “Humidity Built The Snowman,” and a demo version of “Lake Marie.”

This one deserves to be played at max volume. God bless John Prine.
