Layin’ it down.
Out of all the new faces emerging in the genre, it’s hard to point to a buzzier artist these days than Ty Myers. At only 18 years old, the Texas native has already scored a platinum record for his breakout hit, “Ends of the Earth,” along with two gold records for his other viral hits, “Drinkin’ Alone” and “Thought It Was Love.” Couple that with massive numbers on TikTok, a successful debut album that charted inside the Top 15 on Billboard’s Hot Country Chart and continued success on his sold-out The Select Tour, it’s hard to point to a younger, more successful artist right now.
Just a day after being selected as an opener across all 10 of Luke Combs’ North American shows on his new My Kinda Saturday Night International Tour, Myers is back again with a new release. Instead of delivering a new track, he’s teaming up with none other than Marcus King on a cover of Little Feat’s “Two Trains.”
In case you’re not familiar with Little Feat (though you should be considering how incredible their discography is), they’re a rock band from the 1970s best known for hits such as “Willin’” and “Dixie Chicken.” Throughout their career, they’ve been nominated for two Grammys, most recently receiving a nod back in 2023 for Best Traditional Blues Album for their album, Sam’s Place.
Despite not being a traditional name associated with country music, Little Feat has been covered by the likes of Sierra Ferrell when she covered the aforementioned “Willin’” back in 2024 and Eric Church when he continually performed “Sailing Shoes” back in 2023 during his Outsiders Revival Tour. In fact, the Chief even performed “Dixie Chicken” with the band back in 2022 at the Ryman. Recently, Little Feat was also introduced to many younger listeners when Zach Bryan covered “Roll Um Easy,” at his sold-out concert at Red Rocks before teasing a studio version of the cover on Instagram back in August.
Appearing on the same release as the aforementioned, “Roll Um Easy,” “Two Trains” was released back in 1973 on Little Feat’s third and arguably most popular album, Dixie Chicken. Characterized by their signature bluesy style, complete with some infectious guitar licks and strong backup vocals, the track has remained one of their most popular in today’s streaming age with over 17 million streams on Spotify alone.
Myers, who’s already shown plenty flashes of towards a blues and R&B sound, predominately on tracks such as “Ends of the Earth,” “Cant Hold Me Down” and his cover of John Mayer’s “Man On The Side,” slides into the track effortlessly both vocally and sonically. Immediately entering the song with some swagger, he lays down an rock solid first verse and chorus while adhering to the original.
Then King enters the track and elevates the track tenfold, delivering yet another world class vocal performance. If you know anything about Marcus King, you know that whenever he gets a hold of a song with some blues edge you’re in for something special. And if you don’t believe me check out his latest album, Darling Blue, or any of his features with the likes of Kashus Culpepper, Zac Brown Band and more. It’s no different here on “Two Trains.” Taking charge of the second verse and chorus, King delivers another killer vocal that’s simply dripping with soul from line to line.
Given that both King and Myers both seem to be at their best leaning into the blues influences, it should come as no surprise that they absolutely crush this Little Feat track. Adhering incredibly close to the original recording, complete with the strong, choir-esque backup vocals, the duo deliver a worthy cover that seriously rivals the original. If you’re a fan of both Myers and King, this is a must-listen.
