TroyBoi just set the dial to 2001 in honor of one of India’s most iconic voices.
The British DJ and producer has released perhaps the most emotionally resonant record of his career thus far, “Kabhi,” a tribute to legendary Indian playback singer Lata Mangeshkar. The track marks the first time that vocals from the 2001 Bollywood epic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham have been officially cleared for use outside of the Indian cinema industry, and it’s a move that demonstrates the magnitude of trust placed in TroyBoi to honor her legacy.
“Growing up, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghum was played on repeat in our home,” TroyBoi said in a statement. “My mum is Indian, and through her, I was immersed in the richness of Indian culture — the music, the stories, the colors, the emotion. Sampling this piece wasn’t just a creative decision; it was a way to honor a voice that shaped my childhood and pay tribute to a cultural icon whose artistry continues to inspire the world.”
“Lata Mangeshkar was not just a legendary singer, but a soul who defined the sound of Indian cinema for generations. She’s often called the ‘Nightingale of India,’ but to me, her voice feels like memory itself — timeless, emotional, and deeply spiritual. This is my small offering to that legacy.”
Mangeshkar was a cornerstone of cinema and cultural identity, with a career spanning over 70 years and an estimated 30,000 recorded songs. Her performance on the Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham title track remains one of her most enduring. TroyBoi described flipping the track as a “full circle” moment, echoing the emotional ties so many South Asian families hold with the film and its music.
“Kabhi” arrives as the second single from TroyBoi’s upcoming EP, Rootz, which will feature five tracks. The full project is scheduled to release on Friday, September 19th.
