The Billy Strings-King of the Hill crossover that we didn’t know we needed.

On August 4th, the beloved animated series known as King of the Hill returned for its 14th season. Many fans of the show thought the show’s run was over when it aired it’s final episode in May of 2010. But in this modern era of reboots and revivals, King of the Hill was evidently deemed worthy of getting to continue it’s story.

So now, over 15 years since we last saw the Hill family, their propane-powered antics continue. And unlike other shows that might have just picked back up where they left off, the modern version of King of the Hill accounted for the decade and a half that passed between seasons.

It’s currently airing on Hulu, and it’s iconic theme song even got a surprisingly good update. Fans of the show are certainly familiar with the instrumental song “Yahoos and Triangles” that plays over the opening sequence. It was originally played by a rock band known as The Refreshments, and their version was kept in the beginning of the show.

The same can’t be said for the end credits.

King of the Hill super-fan and uberly talented Bluegrass musician Billy Strings took over the track that plays once the episode is over, and it’s wildly impressive. Someone from the show must have caught wind of Strings cueing up the theme song in some of his live performances, and when it came time to bring back the show, they must have thought to reach out to the 32-year-old artist.

Billy Strings isn’t alone in the reprise. The fresh take on the theme song also features some of Billy Strings’ featured bandmates. Drummer Jamie Dick, mandolinist Jarrod Walker, banjoist Russ Carson, fiddler Billy Contreras all contributed to the updated reprise, as did banjo player Billy Failing, bassist Royal Masat and fiddler Alex Hargreaves.

It might sound like a crowded room for what the song’s purpose is (just playing when the end credits roll), but fans have always appreciated the attention to detail of King of the Hill, and they are certainly loving this added detail in the modern version of the show.

And Billy Strings is certainly excited about the opportunity to play a part in one of his favorite shows. He took to his social media yesterday to share the news that a) King of the Hill was back and b) he and his bandmates laid down their own rendition of the theme song to be used in the series – presumably from here on out.

Love that quote from Hank Hill as the caption.

Speaking of love, fans of the show can’t get enough of what I’m comfortable calling “Hilly Strings.” They left these comments of praise below Billy’s post commending him and the show for making the crossover happen:

“My favorite artist and my favorite show have entered the chat.”

“Unbelievably cool.”

“Throwback to the ‘King of the Hill’ bluegrass episode.”

“No way… this is amazing.”

“Legendary s**t!”

“Dammit Billy, this just made my day.”

“Big win for Billy Strings and King of the Hill fans.”
