Tom Brady must have been sick to his stomach watching a 44-year-old Philip Rivers live out his un-retirement dream this past weekend.
In case you missed it, Tom Brady says he could come back and play in the NFL. It’s almost as if Tom yearns to stay in the news cycle, and floats out rumors about ending his retirement every so often. Just imagine a now 48-year-old Tom Brady running out of the tunnel and out onto the field.
Crazy to think about, right? But with as much as the seven-time Super Bowl winner continues to leave the door open, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. There were even rumors not too long ago that Brady is in the best shape of his life. As they say, age is just a number.
But I can’t be alone in growing weary of the “will-he-won’t-he” nature of his retirement. This man simply can’t decide if he wants to be done with football or not. It’s certainly seemed as of late, with the whole lucrative NFL broadcasting deal and what-not, that he’s slowly-but-surely settled into his post football career. But hey… the NFL’s GOAT has already retired, un-retired, and then retired again, so ol’ Tommy Touchdown isn’t a stranger to flip-flopping.
And based on how he was talking on The Big Podcast with Shaq, Brady not only thinks that he’s still got some left in the tank, he believes that he could beat up on modern day defenses. The longtime New England Patriots and short time Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback says he’d only need a month or so of preparation to get back to his starting form:
“I’d whoop a** right now. Absolutely. I could go out there and play. Give me a month, I could go play with anybody. I took care of my body great. Everything is great… I could do it all. What I wouldn’t do is make the commitment to play, because it’s like, do you really want to commit to playing (the whole season)? That takes a lot of training. I don’t want to do that anymore.”
It’d be a comeback for all-time… and I think Tom is right. With all of the poor QB play in the NFL right now, he’d undoubtedly be able to shred some defenses. Could he be a Top 10 quarterback in the league? To answer that question, I’ll somewhat quote the late, great Toby Keith and say that Brady might not be as good as he once was, but I’d bet that once, he’d be as good as he ever was.
Let’s be real though… Brady would have a lot of hoops to jump through considering a) he’s a minority owner in an NFL team and b) has a lucrative, multi-million-dollar broadcasting contract with FOX Sports to fulfill. A pushing-50 comeback would be unlikely.
However, considering the numbers that Philip Rivers drew when he got off the couch and jumped back into the NFL (it was the most watched Colts game in the Indianapolis area in the last five years), NFL fans everywhere wouldn’t hesitate to tune in to watch Tom Brady sling it again. The post Surprise, Surprise… 48-Year-Old Tom Brady Thinks He Could Come Out Of Retirement: “Give Me A Month” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
