Spotify announced this week that it has launched a new direct messaging feature in its mobile app, a turn towards social media that gives users the ability to chat and share music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
Messages are one-on-one and available only between users who have interacted on Spotify before, such as through playlist collaborations, Jams, Blends, or shared plans. Conversations live in a new inbox that users can access by tapping the profile icon.
The rollout begins this week for Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select countries. To share content, listeners tap the share button while playing something and then choose from existing or suggested contacts.
“As always, you should continue sharing Spotify content directly through your favorite platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, TikTok, and more,” the company wrote in a blog post. “Messages on Spotify are designed to complement these integrations, and we’re excited to keep offering more ways to build excitement around the content you love, wherever you are.”
Users can report messages, block accounts, or opt out of the feature entirely. Spotify also notes that all messages are encrypted using “proactive detection technology to scan messages for certain unlawful and harmful content” and the company’s human moderators will review reported content.
For now, the feature is exclusive to mobile. A release date for desktop or other platforms has not been announced.
