A South Carolina man is going viral for taking police on a not-so-high-speed chase around Charleston, attempting to escape law enforcement in construction equipment.
Early in the morning on Sunday, June 8th, North Charleston police responded to a call from another unit on the highway after seeing a large piece of construction equipment with treads and a shovel in front go across US Highway 78. This sighting was close to 3:30 am.
While it’s not common to see a piece of equipment like this slowly driving down the road at this hour, given that it could have been used by a nighttime construction crew and no illegal actions were taking place, the unit did not call in this sighting.
However, minutes later, a burglary call from a heavily damaged business saw the excavator slowly depart.
After receiving the call, police squad cars pursued the man in the excavator at a very slow speed chase. The chase only got up to 3 mph, and at times, the squad cars would have to stop and pause to ensure they did not pass the burglar.
The entire time, police had their blue lights on and told the 53-year-old male suspect to stop because he was under arrest, but the man did not pull over or stop. After an hour and twelve minutes, the man drove on to the Charleston County Fairgrounds property, and the excavator got stuck. The man then tried to run from police, but a drone was following him, leading police and canine team members to know his location and arrest him.
According to AP News records, the man behind this wild chase was charged with failure to stop for a blue light and two counts of malicious injury to real property and remained in the Charleston County jail on a $22,000 bond.
I’m not saying that protocols should be broken here, but slowly meandering behind this guy for over an hour seems excessive. You’re telling me someone couldn’t have gotten on foot and yelled at him or done something to the outside of the machinery to get it to slow down?
The new reports note that the highest speed reached during this race was three mph, so he was going less than that during parts of it. Three mph is the average walking speed for humans. In fact, I’m walking at 3.3 mph as I write this story on my walking pad.
Surely something could have been done to decrease the time of this police chase…
At least the footage of the chase is entertaining.
The comments left on the post were even better. Check out a few of my favorites.

“Close enough. Welcome back, Killdozer.”

“How did it take them an hour to catch him?”
“This chase lasted 1 hour 12 minutes and 36 feet.”
“I wanna party with this guy!”
“You know what, hell yeah.”
“YES, Instagram. I am interested in this type of content.”
