Shane Gillis Broke Out The Trump Impersonation To Argue Politics With His Mom At Thanksgiving: “She Was Hammered”

Breaking out the Trump impersonation at Thanksgiving dinner is a bold move… that is unless you are Shane Gillis.
Getting together with family during the holiday season can be a bit stressful. If you are smart, you’ll try to avoid talking politics altogether. I’m not sure I’ve ever been involved in a productive, civil, political conversation with family in my entire life. There’s just something about the two things that don’t mix.
I’d imagine if you could do a Donald Trump impersonation though, you might be more inclined to try and get the political discussion jumpstarted.
One person that has President Trump down pat is comedian Shane Gillis. He often goes to his “Trump voice” during his stand-up routine, and has even really gone for it – costume and all – on a couple of occasions. One of those was when he hosted Saturday Night Live, and another was when he stayed in character for two whole hours during an episode of Kill Tony.
Here’s a taste of the latter just in case you’ve somehow never heard Shane Gillis’ Trump impersonation before:
Gillis nails every part – the voice, the movements, the inflictions, the vocabulary. It’s impressive.
And funny enough, he doesn’t just save that impersonation for the stage. Gillis apparently deploys it in his everyday life, and never shies away from breaking out his POTUS during family gatherings. In fact, in the most recent episode of Matt & Shane’s Secret Podcast, the comedian said that he loves to get into political arguments… especially at Thanksgiving.
From this quote, it sounds like they filmed this episode just before “Turkey Day” last week:
“Hopefully we get some of that though. I’d love some political fighting at Thanksgiving. I’m down to do it. I love it.”
On this particular episode of the podcast, Shane brought his dad, Phil, on as a guest. The patriarch of the Gillis family was able to unveil that when the Gillis’s get together, both sides of the political aisle are represented. Phil even mentioned that his wife, Joan Gillis, doesn’t see eye-to-eye with her son, Shane, when it comes to politics.
Shane’s dad then broke into a story about how his stand-up comic son once had a political argument with Joan, and Shane broke out his President Trump impersonation mid-conversation:
“She and Shane are going after each other on the political stuff, and all of the sudden, this is after three or four hours of drinking and three or four hours after the Thanksgiving meal. Shane is arguing with her and talking, and all of the sudden, he starts talking like Trump. And she’s like a dog… she turned her head, like she was trying to understand, ‘Is this really Trump talking?’ Like she was all screwed up.”
The money that clip would make if there was a camera rolling on the Gillis family Thanksgiving.
Shane Gillis added that the story his father told was 100% the truth. The comedian talked like he had the time of his life doing his Trump to confuse his intoxicated mother, and even said that he was hoping to get another Trump catchphrase in at the upcoming Thanksgiving table:
“It was fun to argue with her as Trump while she was hammered on wine. She was like *inaudible noises*. I’m gonna get a little, ‘Quiet piggy’ in at Thanksgiving, at the table. That’ll be chaos.”
Hilarious.
The Gillis family evidently likes to have fun. Politics can tear other families apart, but for Shane Gillis and his family members? All it does is make for great stand-up material and podcast banter.
