Ryan Blaney knows all about the fast life on the race track. But when the weekend ends and he’s taking some time off, Blaney knows how to slow it down with some good ol’ country tunes.

Black Buffalo Inc. sat down with Blaney to talk music and find out his top ten of all time. His playlist covers everything — from outlaw country to modern Appalachian ballads to a surprise Texas rap. In true Ryan fashion, every song comes with a little bit of history and a lot of authenticity.

Here’s Blaney’s top 10 in his own words:

1. Colorado Cool-Aid – Johnny Paycheck

You’d expect a NASCAR driver to love Johnny Paycheck’s “Take This Job and Shove It,” but Blaney digs deeper into the catalog. “Colorado Cool-Aid” is a barroom ballad where the moral of the story is: disrespect a buddy, and you might lose an ear.

“It’s a great ballad. Kind of teaches about manners… I love Johnny Paycheck and that’s one of my favorite songs of his.”

Blaney’s takeaway? Sometimes country music doesn’t just tell a story, but teaches you a code of honor.

2. Livin’ the Dream – Sturgill Simpson

If any song sums up Blaney’s life right now as a NASCAR champion, it’s this one.

“He just kind of explains you know what it’s like trying to achieve his dream and he kind of has achieved it or is working toward it. I just like the song — it kinda relates to me, like I’m kinda living the dream with what I do.”

It’s not bragging if it’s true.

3. Oneida – Tyler Childers

Tyler Childers has never shied away from singing about the unconventional. In “Oneida,” a young man is head over boots for an older woman.

“It’s a pretty neat song and something that I’ve always enjoyed.”

Blaney clearly appreciates a little oddball storytelling in country too.

4. All Again – Charles Wesley Godwin

For Blaney, this isn’t just another song on his playlist. This one’s personal. And despite his NASCAR wins, this one was played on the greatest day of his life.

“My wife and I danced to it at our wedding — it was our first dance song.”

Safe to say this one will always make his list.

5. Another Leaf – Charles Wesley Godwin

Sticking with CWG, Blaney connects to “Another Leaf” in a big way. The song talks about adding on to your family tree. It resonates with Blaney especially now considering…

“We are currently in the process of becoming parents for the first time.”

Family, legacy, and new beginnings. This is what Blaney values most.

6. The Largest – BigXthaPlug

Not every song on Blaney’s playlist is traditional country. He’s got some Texas rap in the mix too. We decided not to call him out for putting this on his country playlist because BigXthaPlug’s got deep Texan roots.

“Texas rapper. Big dude. He pretty much goes over that he is the biggest, the largest. I don’t know if he’s talking about his stature or his size in the rap community but BigXthaPlug is one of my favorite rappers currently.”

Even a country guy needs a little hype music sometimes.

7. Turtles All the Way Down – Sturgill Simpson

To say that Blaney loves Sturgill Simpson would be an understatement. Not only does he have two songs on his top ten playlist, Blaney also named his dog after him.

“I think at the end of the day he talks about, you know, there’s a lot of beliefs out there. No matter what you wanna believe in at the end of the day it’s kinda about being a decent human being. And that song just kinda sticks with me. That song is really what got me on to Sturgill.”

8. Any Man of Mine – Shania Twain

Everyone’s got a guilty pleasure except when it’s Shania. Then it’s just good taste.

“I love Shania Twain. I grew up listening to Shania Twain. I went to her concert a couple years ago. And my wife and I love ‘Any Man of Mine.’ She blasts it all the time. I love anything that Shania puts out.”

No shame in blasting a little Shania, especially if the wife loves it too. (And based on this song choice, we know she’s calling the shots.)

9. 9 to 5 – Dolly Parton

There’s no list without Dolly. Period.

“Absolute staple in the country music community. I think we can all relate working 9-5 trying to make a living. I think that’s true for anybody out there so anybody can relate.”

Even NASCAR drivers know the grind … only their office just happens to go 200 mph.

10. I’ve Been Everywhere – Johnny Cash

Between race weekends, sponsor appearances, and everything in between, Blaney’s calendar looks a lot like Johnny Cash’s lyrics.

“Been all around the country. His travel schedule is a lot like mine. Pouring all over the place just doing your job, all places across the United States and even the world.”

Blaney’s not slowing down anytime soon.

Ryan Blaney’s playlist is a lot like his driving style: fast, fearless, and full of personality. Whether it’s outlaw legends, modern storytellers, or unexpected rap anthems, each track tells you a little more about who he is off the track.
