Riley Green’s path to superstardom has been an interesting one to watch develop.

First breaking onto the scene back in 2018 with his debut, Top 5 hit, “There Was This Girl,” the Alabama native experienced early success right out of the gate. In the years following, he’d become a mainstay on radio, so to speak, scoring hits chart-wise with tracks such as “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” and “Different ‘Round Here.” With that being said, it still felt like something was missing that was holding him back from reaching the upper echelon of country stars today.

That all changed last year with what can only be described as the perfect storm of hits, virality and the success of his feature on Ella Langley’s 3x ACM Award-winning single, “you look like you love me.” Beyond the success of Langley’s song, Green struck gold with the release of his third album, Don’t Mind If I Do. The now certified gold record quickly caught the attention of many, thanks in part to the inclusion of pre-released tracks, “Jesus Saves” and “Worst Way,” which would quickly rise to the top of many year-end rankings.

Though “Worst Way” had already been released on his April 2024 EP, Way Out Here, it truly reached new heights on its re-release on Don’t Mind If I Do. Garnering over 250 million streams on Spotify alone, along with a 2x platinum certification from the RIAA, the track became Green’s first solo #1 hit on Billboard’s Country Airplay Chart. “Worst Way’s” success was not due to the song itself, however. Its steamy music video also went viral upon its release back in February, garnering 10 million views in just two months and a staggering 22 million views as of today.

With all that being said, it seems like Green knows that the fans are now expecting more love songs from him, even if he’s not a big fan of them himself.

In an interview with CMT, the “Change My Mind” singer noted how he’s “afraid” he has to write more songs like “Worst Way” following its massive success:

“I’m afraid I’m gonna have to write more love songs now. It’s not really my thing. Now I think I’m stuck. I think I’m gonna have to have at least one of those on every record.”

Considering the success of “Worst Way” and even “Change My Mind” (which didn’t get nearly enough attention), I think it would be a pretty smart move to keep the love songs coming.

In other news, the deluxe version of Don’t Mind If I Do releases TONIGHT with six new songs. Judging by the teasers for “Make It Rain” and “Cowboy As It Gets” with Randy Houser, it sounds like it’s going to be a great addition to the already rock-solid record.
