Looking back on fond memories.

Pat Green is healing his grief through the power of music and helping others in need. At this point, we are all familiar with the news that parts of Texas were ravaged by flash flooding over the 4th of July weekend. The death toll has reached 133, rescue missions are not recovery missions, with close to 100 people still unaccounted for. Many families lost loved ones and are still hopeful that they will find their loved ones so they can be properly laid to rest.

One person suffering a loss from the horrific events is the Texas singer-songwriter Pat Green. After the floods, Green shared on Instagram that he had suffered a “heartbreaking and deeply personal loss” as a result of the flooding.

“Over the weekend, during the devastating flooding that hit Central Texas, my family – like so many others – suffered a heartbreaking and deeply personal loss. We are grieving alongside countless Texans whose lives have been upended by this tragedy.

Right now, we kindly ask for privacy and space as we mourn, support each other, and begin to process what comes next for our family. Thank you for your love, prayers, and compassion.”

After Pat shared that on social media, his wife, Kori, shared more information about their family’s situation on her social media pages, and it’s unimaginable. Kori shared that Pat’s youngest brother, John Burgess, his wife, Julia, and two children were swept away in the flood.

“We are so thankful for the outpouring of love and concern. Pat’s little brother John, his wife, Julia, and two of their children were swept away in the Kerrville flood. We are heartbroken and anxiously waiting for all of them to be found. Thank you for your prayers.”

Green’s youngest brother, John Burgess, and his wife, Julia, were staying in the Texas Hill Country to go pick up their eldest daughter at a camp that was not impacted by the flooding. The family had rented a place at the Blue Oak RV Park in Kerr County, which was the region most affected by the floods. When the Guadalupe River began to rise, the RV park was a location that was nearly washed away by the floodwaters.

Pat Green, while mourning the loss of his brother, sister-in-law, and nephews, still put together an incredible benefit concert to help others in need. On July 16th, country artists gathered at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, for Pat Green and Friends: Texas Flood Relief Livestream. The non-ticketed, no-audience livestream created a benefit show that country fans from all over could attend and support a fantastic cause while watching.

The concert raised an astonishing amount of money, with over $1 million, yes MILLION dollars, going to flood relief efforts.

While the benefit was about the music and fundraising, media outlets naturally brought up the loss of his brother. In an interview with Fox 4 during his benefit concert, Green opened up about the tragic loss of his brother and how he hopes to be there to help rebuild his family and support his brother’s surviving daughter.

“I lost my brother, my sister-in-law, John and Julia, and their two boys. Thankfully, our niece has survived. And now it’s time we think about how we can rebuild the life around her.

And then I thought about how many thousands of people across the great state have been directly affected by this and how many of their families have to do the same thing. I just want to give so much love to my parents who lost their children and their grandchildren.”

Pat Green also revisited some of his favorite things about his brother when chatting with WFAA 8 at Globe Life Field. The story originates from when John was in college and made some irresponsible choices, so he called his big brother for advice.

“My favorite memory of my brother John was when he came to me. I bought him a Nissan Pathfinder, it was yellow, and it had 9 million miles on it, but he didn’t have a car, so I helped him out.

He hocked it to have a keg party. He was very young, he was in college…TCU. Anyways, long story short, I told him I’m not buying him two cars, but I’ll come over and have a beer.”

Solid response as a big brother. You can tell that Green is holding back his emotions, taking a second to collect himself before saying:

“He was the best…just the best.”

The news reporter then asked Pat Green if his brother had ever shared any of his favorite songs from his catalog.

“I don’t know, he was a lifelong fan because he was around whenever I started. I guess he has plenty, but I don’t know. No, we didn’t ever talk about things like that. John and I were just buddies, you know?

We went fishing all the time, stuff like that. It was different. None of my family is about ‘me.’ It’s about us.”
