Self-described as “not your father’s country band,” Ole 60 has been making waves in the alt. country scene since their debut in 2023. Since bursting onto the scene with the viral, now certified gold track, “Smoke & a Light,” the Kentucky band has continually released stellar track after stellar track, highlighted best by their debut 2024 EP, Songs About You.
As is the case with many of the stellar alt. country artists and groups dominating the subgenre lately, Koe Wetzel, Shane Smith & the Saints, Treaty Oak Revival and Kolby Cooper come to mind, Ole 60 exists right in the middle between alternative rock and country. From the aforementioned “Smoke & a Light” to “Next to You” to the heavy “Dust 2 Dust,” their signature sound undoubtedly blurs the lines between a wide array of genres.
This, of course, is also highlighted in their live shows. In between playing hits such as “Thoughts of You,” “Brother Joe” and one of their newest releases, the stellar “Nancy Avenue,” the Kentucky group often plays covers from the likes of Alice in Chains (“Nutshell”), Pink Floyd (“Wish You Were Here”), Oasis (“Champagne Supernova) and most notably, Coldplay’s “Yellow.”
In case you’re unfamiliar with Ole 60’s relationship with “Yellow,” it’s become nothing short of a setlist staple for the band, being played at nearly every show the past year. Their cover has also gone viral on TikTok a countless number of times, with multiple live performance clips receiving hundreds of thousands of views along with tens of thousands of likes consistently. The virality comes with good reason, obviously. It’s simply that good.
It’s no stretch to say “Yellow” is the centerpiece of Coldplay’s deep discography, having over 3.2 billion streams on Spotify alone and platinum status in eight different countries, including being 4x platinum here in the U.S. Covering a song as popular as “Yellow” can oftentimes be risky, given how beloved it is for many. In Ole 60’s case, however, fans everywhere have fallen in love with their version, so much so that they’ve been begging for an official release.
Well, it looks like the wait is finally over.
After announcing that their highly anticipated debut album, Smokestack Town, is coming out Friday, October 3, last week, Ole 60 dropped another bomb on their fans over the weekend at their show at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Introducing the cover of “Yellow,” frontman Jacob Ty Young officially confirmed that the song will appear on Smokestack Town. This, of course, was met by a huge roar from the Myrtle Beach crowd.
“If you know this one, it’s not by us. It’s a Coldplay song. We recorded a version of it, and we’re going to put it out on October 3rd on the album, ‘Smokestack Town.'”

As previously mentioned, Ole 60’s debut album, Smokestack Town, is coming out next Friday, October 3. The 11-track record will include the pre-released “Nancy Avenue” and “Really Wanna Know,” their cover of “Yellow” and eight more brand new songs.
While you’re here, fire up their cover of “Yellow” live in Boston earlier in the year.
