A show that heavily highlighted country music in its soundtrack just got the axe.

These days, every single studio out there is looking at the media empire that Taylor Sheridan has created and trying to figure out how to replicate it. Not many have been successful in that endeavor, but one show that did really seem like it had legs was Netflix’s The Waterfront.

Starring mainly unknown actors and actresses, the plot of the series followed a powerful North Carolina fishing family that was watching the empire they worked so hard to build crumble right in front of their eyes. It was both a family drama and a crime drama, and many were calling it Netflix’s answer to Yellowstone.

And that “answer” only lasted one season, despite the show doing great numbers for the streaming service.

The Waterfront had strong viewing numbers in its debut month. Over 11.6 million people tuned in during the series’ first week of availability, and the show spent three weeks at the No. 1 spot in Netflix’s Global Top 10 Series list. Despite those impressive ratings, Netflix announced that the show wouldn’t come back for a second season.

While it’s certainly sad that fans of the show won’t get to see the Buckley family and their fishing empire on screen again, the worst part of the show’s cancellation is that it was doing a great job championing country music. Like Taylor Sheridan shows like to do, The Waterfront‘s soundtrack was riddled with country artists like Ryan Bingham, Brent Cobb, Chris Stapleton, and Stephen Wilson Jr., among others.

One of the most effective ways of discovering new music nowadays is through tracks being featured in TV shows and movies. Whether it realized it or not, The Waterfront was acting as another avenue for people to discover new country music artists. The second season would have undoubtedly continued that trend, but sadly, Netflix put a stop to it… and weirdly renewed other shows that didn’t have as strong of a debut (Ransom Canyon – 9.4 million, Forever – 6.7 million).

So now, all we can do is revisit The Waterfront‘s stellar Season 1 soundtrack. It did a great job of highlighting new and older country music acts, and featured a healthy dose of Stephen Wilson Jr., who is one of my personal favorite country music artists (yeah, that’s right, I made this story about me).
