So that’s what that song was really saying?

We’ve all listened to a track a couple of times through and thought we knew the words to the song, right? Sometimes you are so sure you know the chorus, only to be embarrassed when you belt it out in front of your friends in the car. Mishearing the lyrics to songs has been happening ever since music was invented, so don’t feel ashamed. And the country music genre can be especially guilty when the southern twang gets in the way of proper pronunciation.

To pull back the curtain a bit and get this thing rolling, I legitimately thought for the longest time that Darius Rucker was singing about having spaghetti hands in his hit song “Alright.” Did it make sense that Rucker was singing a song about having noodle hands? No, of course not. But for some strange reason, this is what I heard for years:

“Don’t need no five star reservations, I’ve got spaghetti hands and a cheap bottle of wine.”

Clearly, that’s as wrong as can be.

The actual lyrics to the track go like this:

“Don’t need no five star reservations, I’ve got spaghetti and a cheap bottle of wine.”

There’s just a bit of an emphasis on the word “and” that I missed until I looked up the actual lyrics. But hey, I had some fun with the idea that Rucker had hands made out of spaghetti. What an awful life that would be, eh?

All that to say that I’m not the only one who has cued up a country song and misunderstood what the artist was trying to convey. Sometimes it’s a small little mixup, while other times the misinterpretation can change the meaning of the entire song. So I thought I’d collect some of the more popular misheard lyrics and present them to you. And I apologize in advance… if you didn’t mistake some of the lyrics below, you might not ever hear them the same again.

Let’s get into it.

“9 to 5” by Dolly Parton

Actual Lyrics: “And you think about it, don’t you?”

Misheard Lyrics: “And you think that I would daunt you?”

“Take a Little Ride” by Jason Aldean

Actual Lyrics: “Slide your pretty little self on over.”

Misheard Lyrics: “Slide your pretty little cellphone over.”

“Be My Baby Tonight” by John Michael Montgomery

Actual Lyrics: “Could ya, would ya, ain’t ya gonna.”

Misheard Lyrics: “Coogie, woogie, ain’t ya gonna.”

“Knockin’ Boots” by Luke Bryan

Actual Lyrics: “Birds need bees and ice needs whiskey.”

Misheard Lyrics: “Birds need bees and I sneeze whiskey.”

“I Like It, I Love It” by Tim McGraw

Actual Lyrics: “Don’t know what it is ’bout that little girl’s lovin.’ But I like it, I love it, I want some more of it.”

Misheard Lyrics: “Don’t know what it is ’bout that little gal’s oven. But I like it, I love it, I want some more of it”

“Don’t Blink by Kenny Chesney

Actual Lyrics: “Asked him what’s the secret to life, he looked up from his old pipe”

Misheard Lyrics: “Asked him what’s the secret to life, he looked up from his home pie.”

“Beachin'” by Jake Owen

Actual Lyrics: “White sand, cold can.”

Misheard Lyrics: “White sand, c**aine.”

“I Am That Man” by Brooks & Dunn

Actual Lyrics: “I am that man.”

Misheard Lyrics: “I am Batman.”

So were you guilty of mishearing any of those yourself? Which was your personal favorite mix up? For me, I’m a big fan of Brooks & Dunn’s “I am Batman.” Think of the crossover appeal the song could have with country artists and comic book fans? Obviously the country music duo didn’t actually say Batman, but if they recorded a version that did… they could rake in money from DC Comics and Batman movies.
