A simple tribute to her beloved uncle.

Megan Moroney is one of thousands of Americans who lost loved ones in the tragic events that occurred on September 11th, 2001.

I’m sure many of us can still remember exactly where we were when we watched the Twin Towers fall after radical jihadist, terrorists hijacked commercial airplanes and carried out coordinated attacks against multiple targets in the United States. Those include the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, as well as the plane that crashed into an empty field in Pennsylvania (which was likely headed for either the U.S. Capitol or the White House), after brave passengers fought back against the hijackers.

The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people, and America has never been the same.

While the pain from that horrific day is still palpable, it’s also a time to reflect on everything that happened, and remember those whose lives were tragically taken. Megan’s uncle, Dennis Moroney, was her father’s brother, and he worked as a senior vice president for Cantor Fitzgerald in the World Trade Center, and none of the employees at the firm who were there that day survived the attack.

I came across a lengthy Facebook post about Dennis, which talks about his incredible life as a father and husband. He passed away at just 39-years old in the North Tower on the 101st floor. According the the post, Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Nancy, and they had two children together.

The post states that:

“Dennis Gerard Moroney was born on November 7, 1961 to Joan and Thomas Moroney in the Bronx, NY. He had five brothers, Thomas, Michael, Kevin, Brian, J.P., and Patrick. He lived in Eastchester, NY. Dennis attended and graduated from Saint John Vianney High School and Manhattan College in 1984.

Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Moroney. Dennis and Nancy had a loving marriage of 16 years and two children together, Elizabeth, age 11, and Timothy, age 9 (at the time of Dennis’s passing). Dennis was a devoted husband and father who loved spending time with his family.”

There’s also a quote from his wife, Nancy, which says Dennis was the ultimate “family man”:

“He was a family man if there ever was one.”

It continues, saying Dennis coached his children’s soccer teams, loved playing golf, and was planning a big 40th birthday celebration in November. They were planning to invite his friends from Eastchester, as well as his work friends from Cantor Fitzgerald:

“He enjoyed coaching his children’s soccer teams and going out to eat with his family. He also enjoyed playing golf, jogging, and swimming in his free time. Dennis was greatly looking forward to his 40th birthday in November and planned a big party with all their friends from Eastchester and from Cantor Fitzgerald.

Dennis and Nancy had been planning it since the summer and we’re going to have invitations go out on October 1st. Dennis was described by his friends and family as funny, charming, kind, and compassionate.”

It’s just heartbreaking to read, and I can only imagine how hard this day is for his family, especially his wife and children, who were still so young when he passed.

He was on the 101st floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower when the plane hit, and when Flight 11 struck the North Tower, it made getting off of their floor impossible:

“Dennis worked as a senior vice president for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 101st floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. He started working for the firm in November of 1993 and was very proud to be working there.

He also made a lot of friends at the firm. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Dennis was working on the 101st floor when Flight 11 struck the North Tower, leaving his floor and all of Cantor’s floors above the impassable impact zone.”

Megan shared a simple tribute to her uncle on her Instagram stories, posting a photo of his name inscribed on the National September 11 Memorial, which is at the World Trade Center site.

There is also a white flower where his name is, and I’m assuming it’s a photo Megan or someone in her family took at some point:

She also penned a song about her uncle called “Heaven By Noon,” which was included on her 2024 Am I Okay? album. She wrote it with Jessie Jo Dillon and Matt Jenkins, and used conversations with her aunt about the loss and her feelings on losing her husband in such a sudden and tragic way as inspiration for the lyrics.

The song isn’t a radio hit, or even one of her most popular fan-favorite songs, but it’s an incredibly emotional and important song that deserves and extra listen today. I know it’s a difficult day for so many, even those of us who didn’t lose someone in the tragic attacks on America and the beautiful people who lose their lives that day, but music is healing and Megan outdid herself with this song.

Hopefully, she and her family can find peace in her words here and knowing that Dennis is in a much better place now.
