Matthew McConaughey & Cole Hauser To Star In New Netflix Football Drama From Creator Of ‘True Detective’

Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser together again (they previously starred in Dazed and Confused) for a football drama? COME ON WITH IT.

I typically don’t get excited about shows that are still in the works – without much known about them – but I’m all in this untitled football drama that Netflix just bought. There was quite the competitive market for this project, and ultimately, the streaming giant known for such hits as Squid Game and Stranger Things obtained the rights to the show.

Why am I excited for a series that doesn’t even have a title? Well, I’m just going off who is involved with the project, and what is known of the show (which is very little). Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser have signed on as executive producers, and the two actors are also set to play brothers in the football drama. It’s not known if it will be set in the college or professional football world, but I’m sure that will be revealed in due time.

The other exciting name attached to the project? Nic Pizzolatto, who happens to be the creator of True Detective. Pairing Pizzolatto’s vision with McConaughey’s performance in that first season of True Detective was absolute gold, so there’s no doubt that them working in tandem once more will create more memorable, TV moments. That first season of the anthology series with McConaughey and Woody Harrelson was pure cinema, and I’ve got a feeling that Hauser and McConaughey can pull off something similar.

Cole Houser is still fresh off his run as Rip Wheeler on the hit show Yellowstone, and his character is scheduled to continue his story with the spinoff The Dutton Ranch premiering in early 2026. Considering Matthew McConaughey was briefly attached to star in a Yellowstone spinoff (those plans later fell through), seeing him opposite Hauser might be the closest we get to seeing the Interstellar star in a Yellowstone-esque role.

This football drama idea is one that Hauser and McConaughey have reportedly kicked around for quite some time. They’ve been friends for over two decades, and it’s believed this project was birthed through their friendship and mutual appreciation for the sport of football. Based upon the alleged “competitiveness” to obtain the rights to the project, sports fans and those like dramas could be in for a real treat when the show hits Netflix.

I’ll be interested to see what kind of story Pizzolatto – along with McConaughey and Hauser – want to tell. Both actors are over 50 years old, so it wouldn’t make much sense for them to play football players themselves. Could they be brothers that are coaching against one another? Or perhaps on the same coaching staff of a college or NFL team? There’s all kinds of roads they could go down in the world of football.

Only time will tell how the show shakes out, and when it will drop on Netflix. Rest assured that I’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for any updates, because if this football drama turns out to be anything like that first episode of True Detective, it could go down in television history as an all-time show.
