March Held in Atlanta to Honor Brent Hinds

Amidst a beautiful Atlanta day, folks gathered to pay their respects once again to the late, great ex-Mastodon

guitarist Brent Hinds. Rather than stand around and feel sorry about his death, however, the beloved musician’s loved ones, bandmates, and contemporaries gathered to celebrate him in a “March Of Hinds” on August 31.

Among those in attendance on Sunday were Mastodon members Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher. High on Fire’s Matt Pike could also be seen walking among the crowd that marched from the Elmyr Bar on Euclid Avenue NE to the Star Bar on Moreland Avenue. Hinds’ music was in heavy rotation and those in attendance celebrated Hinds’ life and talents.

Tragically, Hinds passed away on August 20 after he was involved in a car crash while riding his Harley Davidson. According to an official police report of the accident, Hinds was hit by an SUV that failed to yield while turning at the intersection of Memorial Drive SE and Boulevard SE, which is near downtown Atlanta. Officers found him alive and breathing but unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Hinds was an original member of Mastodon since the band’s inception in 2000, where he helped shape the band’s unique sound and style. Having been featured on every one of the band’s albums, it all came as a shock when he was kicked out of the band back in March. During the weeks that followed, Hinds did not hold back on his frustration and anger toward his former bandmates, despite the band’s original statement that all parties “mutually agreed to part ways.”

It’s sad to think how everything went down in the end, especially since we’ll never see Hinds rejoin the rest of Mastodon on stage if they could have patched things up. Hell, maybe he never would have wanted that.

Either way, the world lost a magnificent talent who was taken from us all too soon.
