Luke Combs Says Garth Brooks Surprised Him With A Ford Bronco Raptor For Playing One Song At Songwriters Hall Of Fame Induction
I’m no expert in musician compensation, but one car for one song seems like a really great deal. Luke Combs could easily treat himself to a brand new car if he wanted to. I’m no expert in musician compensation, but one car for one song seems like a really great deal.
Luke Combs could easily treat himself to a brand new car if he wanted to. However, for being one of the biggest stars in country music, he lives a pretty humble life. Though if the opportunity ever arises for one of his industry connections or preexisting contracts to turn into a free and useful item, Combs isn’t opposed to reaping those benefits.
Last Christmas, Combs says he was feeding his son in his kitchen when he noticed his manager had pulled up to the gate of his driveway in a blue Bronco – one that was very similar to the vehicle his manager actually drives. The “One Number Away” singer was thrown off, because as he explained in a recent episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shephard, that wasn’t a usual occurrence:
“He would never show up at my house unannounced. So I was like, ‘Man this is kind of weird.’ He walks in, throws me the keys to this thing, and I was like, ‘Are you giving me your car?’ What is this?’ He said, ‘No man, Garth Brooks bought you this.'”
A brand new, souped-up, Ford Bronco Raptor edition from the country music legend Garth Brooks?
Combs, who admitted that he didn’t feel as though he knew Garth well enough to receive a gift like this, tried to figure out why the country star would have generously given him a vehicle that he had previously said he was interested in. As it turns out, Brooks gifted the Bronco to Combs as payback for what was really a small favor in the music industry:
“I guess it had been about a year and a half before that, he got inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. They did it at the Ryman, and all these people came, and you picked your favorite song that Garth has written…
His team asked me to come and be one of the people that sang a song. Mine was actually ‘The Beaches of Cheyenne,’ which was a hit, but it wasn’t a super hit. He was like, ‘This is for you coming and singing that one song at this thing.'”
If I were Luke Combs, I’d be playing in as many events for Garth Brooks as I could from here on out.
The Bronco was undoubtedly a thoughtful and luxurious gift to receive… but Luke Combs was trying to figure out both how Brooks knew what car he wanted, and why he was given it over a year after he played at Garth’s Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction.
That all became clear after Luke Combs asked his manager a couple of follow up questions:
“I guess he had called my manager and asked, ‘What does Luke like?’ And (my manager answered), ‘Oh, he likes cars. He has a Bronco and likes Fords and stuff.’ And (Garth) was like, ‘Well I’m going to order him a Bronco Raptor.’ I guess they were on hold or something, so it took a year to get it in. I didn’t talk to him from that night until that thing showed up at my house. Obviously, I called him.”
Yeah, the least you can do once you are the recipient of a brand new, hard-to-get car is to give a call to the person that so graciously sent it over.
Luke says he drove 20 minutes and was there for less than an hour, but Garth’s reasoning for the gesture was pretty fair and shows that he certainly values people’s time:
“I drove 20 minutes and was there for less than an hour, dude. But he was like, ‘you could’ve went out and booked your own show that night and made this much money’ or whatever, and I was just floored by that.
And if Garth Brooks is sending people that he doesn’t know all that well gifts like these, I can’t even begin to imagine what kind of gifts the people that Garth is close with get. Guess I’m gonna start practicing my guitar playing and vocals more in hopes of getting a random opportunity to perform on Garth Brooks behalf. I wouldn’t mind getting sent a shiny new Bronco…
