Landman has always been a Texas-based show… even when they had to win the trust of Texas in the early days.

If you haven’t caught Taylor Sheridan’s latest TV hit, what have you been doing with your life? For some viewers, the first season of Landman pulled back the curtain on the oil industry for the very first time, and the upcoming second season aims to do much of the same. That was part of the motivation for the show, which set a streaming record for Paramount+ during the show’s first season. More than 14.9 million people tuned in during the first four weeks to watch the drama surrounding Texas’ oil boom.

When Billy Bob Thornton, who plays Tommy Norris, sat down with Texas Standard to talk about the nature of the series, he revealed he’s more than happy to be a part of the show that has shined a light on an industry that not many people know about. Not only that, the actor says that much of the series highlights just how important and prevalent the resource is.

Which naturally makes the business surrounding it a little dangerous, as Thornton pointed out:

“I don’t think people understand the danger of it and, like I said, the gamble. I mean, you can be a billionaire one day and not the next. It’s an interesting world. And, you know, the good thing is, is that Taylor (Sheridan) didn’t approach it from a partisan point of view.

Even though there are speeches about, ‘Look, here’s where this stuff comes from’ and ‘Everything that you use every day is made out of this.’ He basically just says, ‘Here’s how it works.’ You’re, like I said, looking behind the curtain at this business. And I don’t think we realize every day of our lives what we’re using that is made from oil or needs oil to keep it going or whatever it is.”

The show has truly opened the eyes of many.

Ironically, Landman had to do a lot of convincing during it’s early days to earn the trust of actual oil companies that were located in Texas. Showrunner Christian Wallace spoke about that issue at the ATX TV Festival, and how when they were trying to get the show off the ground and get a little help from local companies, no one in Texas was interested:

“Last year I would make calls to some oil field companies and stuff and be like, ‘Hey, we’re doing this thing.’ They’re like, ‘I don’t know. You’re from Hollywood.’ And I’m like, ‘No, you don’t get it. These are Texans making this show about Texas.’”

Can’t say I blame them, you know?

The good news is that as the show aired, and increased in popularity, all of those companies that Wallace reached out to initially circled back and got in line to help out and be involved with the show:

“Now it’s like they’re calling me up. ‘Hey man. Can we get in that show? I mean, we’ll send you some hats.’ They’re lining up now. It’s cool now that people get what we’re doing and hopefully we don’t get run off as much.”

I’ve got a good feeling that the Landman cast and crew won’t be getting run off anytime soon.

In fact, they are often too busy being praised for what they’re doing for the oil industry, and I’d be willing to guess that this scene has a lot to do with it:
