Sounds like there might be new music dropping soon.

This afternoon, Koe Wetzel shared a teaser of the studio cut of his unreleased song “Surrounded,” which he’s played a couple of times live at different events. The teaser was sent out to his fans via text, which likely means the full song will be dropping in the next week or so, if I had to guess.

In a separate Instagram post, he confirmed that he’s been in the studio and something is coming soon:

“There’s been a lot of life happening lately, just wanted to check in and let y’all know I’ve been in the studio writing a bunch of new music. Really excited and look forward to sharing something with y’all soon! Please continue to keep Texas in your thoughts and prayers, me and a bunch of friends of mine are putting our efforts together to help our fellow Texans during this time. God Bless Texas.”

Koe most recently released his 9 Lives album in July of last year, so it’s been about a year to the date since we’ve gotten a new record from him and I’m sure fans are ready for more, especially considering how much Koe has blowing up in mainstream country over the last year or so thanks to songs like “High Road” and “Sweet Dreams.”

The aforementioned album was definitely a departure sonically from his previous work that was much more heavily influenced by rock and felt a lot more raw and in-your-face. 9 Lives felt a lot softer and quieter, if you will, which was very intentional on Koe’s part as he showed fans a very different side of who he is musically. But anyways, back to “Surrounded.”

The song highlights the double meaning of being “Surrounded” both physically and mentally, as Koe feels trapped in every sense of the word following a breakup where he can’t seem to outrun his ex-lover’s memory, especially when he’s drinking:

“I can’t run out, I can’t fight it
I can’t think ’cause my head’s so clouded
Every morning, every night is
All alone but the room feels crowded
Should’ve took all the mirrors you left
Cause I’m drunk and I can’t be around it
Hands up, we’ve got this house surrounded
And there’s nothing I can do about it.”

It’s definitely along the lines of what he heard on 9 Lives, and given the aforementioned radio success of “High Road” in particular, that seems to be the formula he’s sticking with for now as he continues to make a name for himself well outside the independent country and Texas music scene. Of course, he’s been with a major label for a while, so it’s not surprising to see his career take this sort of turn as he tries to expand his fanbase and take it all to another level.

I do tend to prefer the harsher, grungier sound that Koe made a name on, but I totally understand him wanting to explore different parts of his artistry and I do appreciate that aspect of his newer music too. Koe previously told radio hose Katie Neal earlier this year that he had been in Nashville cutting a new record, and his goal for his next album is to build on what he established on 9 Lives:

“Just kind of growing off of ‘9 Lives.’ You know, I think the music that I’ve made for so long has just kind of instilled into me and just kind of soldered into me and with this new music out, with the new record, I just kind of wanted to get a little bit more of that rock ‘n’ roll side. Back to that Texas rock ‘n’ roll.”

And like I said, with Koe dropping this “Surrounded” clip, it seems like we might be getting closer to at least the start of some sort of rollout for the next record.
