Coming in hot with the deluxe drop.
Like many artists out there today, Kip Moore is one of those names that simply has never gotten the attention he deserves. Despite having a #1 right out of the gate with his debut single “Something ‘Bout a Truck” back in 2012, the Georgia native has routinely fallen into the “severely underrated” category throughout most of his career. And yet, it’s never really mattered. He’s carved his own path, earned his own fans around the country, and even around the world, building a impressive and sustainable career without much help from the likes of country radio.
Back in February, Moore released yet another fantastic record, Solitary Tracks, which served as his sixth studio album and first under Virgin Music Group. Like nearly every one of his albums, Solitary Tracks was yet another wholly unique venture from Moore.
From the high-energy tracks such as “Live Here To Work,” “Around You” and “Good Things Never Last,” which saw the “Last Shot” singer dabbling in a classic rock sound to the introspective musings of “Flowers In December,” “Forever Is A Lie” and “Learning As I Go,” the mammoth, 23-song album had a little bit for everyone.
On Tuesday, Moore announced that a deluxe version of Solitary Tracks was coming with a brand new song, “American Heartbreak,” and a “couple live versions of songs,” which turned out to be “Rivers Don’t Run” and the title track.
In an Instagram post announcing the song’s release this morning, Moore revealed that “American Heartbreak” was actually written nearly four years ago. Despite it being around for the early stages of the Solitary Tracks, he didn’t think it fit the overall vision of the initial release of the album.
He also teased that there might be even more music coming “sooner than later.”
“I tracked ‘American Heartbreak’ in the early stages of making ‘Solitary Tracks.’ I wrote it roughly 4 years ago waiting for the right time to record it. By the end of the year, the direction of the record had found a new path and this song didn’t seem to fit with where I’d gone lyrically and sonically. I couldn’t find any free time within the thick of this tour to make an actual music video, so we decided to film this masterpiece, high quality video (that’s a joke for all you keyboard analytic warriors) on the ride from Irving to Austin, Texas last weekend. The last nugget of ‘Solitary Tracks.’ Btw….There’s something coming around the corner sooner than later. Cheers. We appreciate you guys.”
After a few listens, “American Heartbreak” is already one of my favorite songs from an already stacked record. It feels cliché to say that a track feels like an artist in their sweet spot, but there’s truly no other way to describe “American Heartbreak.” Taking inspiration from classic heartland rock, Moore crafted a stellar nostalgic, Petty-esque, summer anthem about a lost love here. It feels incredibly familiar to the sound that made many fans (myself included) fall in love with the 45-year-old singer/songwriter while simultaneously upping his game with some fantastic attention to detail when creating imagery in the verses.
“Bottle rockets, black cats popping in the summer heat
Eighteen, sipping suds, hiding from the police, yeah
Them high-school bleachers were the perfect cover for some lovers, burning red hot
In a field, in a truck, any place we could find a spot”
Much in the vein of Eric Church’s megahit, “Springsteen,” Moore, along with co-writer Jaren Johnston, paint the perfect picture of a teenage summer love that ended too quickly. It’s so unabashedly American, reckless and youthful, you can’t help but love it. It’s one of those songs that simply beg you to turn up to 10, roll the windows down and reminisce.
