Jimmy Kimmel is back.
Just like that, Disney and ABC have decided that now is the time to return Jimmy Kimmel Live! to the airwaves. This comes after last week, when ABC and its parent company dominated the news thanks to the FCC pushing the network to suspend Jimmy Kimmel and pull his show off the air.
At the time, ABC obliged, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! was taken off the air indefinitely after the late-night host made some ill-advised comments surrounding the death of Charlie Kirk. Here is the segment that “went too far” in the eyes of the FCC.
It mainly had to do with Kimmel spreading false information about the person who assassinated Kirk:
There were plenty of stars, celebrities, and politicians that voiced their displeasure with Kimmel’s comments on Charlie Kirk’s death that ultimately caused Disney and ABC to pull the plug on the show for a week or so. Many believe that the network pulling the show was a good idea… and a good number of people thought the decision should have been permanent.
On the flip side, fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Jon Stewart dedicated some/all of their shows to calling out what they believe to be the government silencing the media through the FCC. Others have argued that Kimmel being taken off the air for something that he said is a violation of the first amendment, which protects free speech.
We found out not long after ABC pulled the show from its lineup that Kimmel was planning to address the backlash on his show, but never got the chance to, according to Bloomberg:
“Kimmel still planned to address the issue on his show, but Disney worried his remarks would further inflame the situation. Walden appealed to Kimmel to adjust his remarks before the show taped on Wednesday. When the two couldn’t agree on a path forward, she made the decision to yank the show after consulting Iger.”
But now, after reports came out that Kimmel and executives at Walt Disney and ABC met late last week and earlier today to try and figure out a path back to Jimmy Kimmel Live! airing on television, the late night program has officially been reinstated. Jimmy Kimmel’s show will return to ABC on Tuesday night, and it’s unclear whether or not Kimmel will address the issue that briefly lost him his job.
You’d have to imagine that he’ll touch on everything, and maybe even crack some big-time jokes about it… unless part of the agreement to come back to late night meant that he’d be unable to do so.
The Walt Disney Company made the announcement that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be returning, and provided this statement to TMZ:
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
So it’s not the end of Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show, as some were predicting. But it was a bumpy part of the road for Jimmy Kimmel Live! and its relationship with ABC and Disney. It’ll be interesting to see how the show moves forward, and if the show host will feel as though he’s walking on thin ice since he’s reportedly been encouraged to tone down his political commentary.
