Jamey Johnson has gotten comfortable working in the Cash Cabin, but he hasn’t lost sight of how historic the recording studio is.

The great Jamey Johnson stopped by the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast to talk about his time in the Marines, listening to contemporary country music and how he enjoys artists like Morgan Wallen, creating his newest album Midnight Gasoline, how he wrote “What A View,” meeting his now-wife and proposing the second day he knew her, and much more.

One of the more interesting tidbits that Johnson provided during our conversation with him was the insight into his use of the Cash Cabin. If you were guessing that it was associated with Johnny Cash, you’d be correct. The structure was built by Johnny Cash in 1979, and it’s located in Hendersonville, Kentucky – just a short drive from Nashville. It was originally owned by Johnny and June Carter Cash, and now belongs to to their son, John Carter Cash.

Here’s just a glimpse of the private, state-of-the-art recording studio shared by the Cash Cabin’s social page:

Now that’s a cabin if I’ve ever seen one.

Jamey Johnson has been spending a lot of time out there as of late. He recorded his entire Midnight Gasoline album in that studio in 2024, and he told us that he’s still utilizing the space. The country music singer and songwriter evidently gets a lot of inspiration being at the historic building connected to Johnny Cash:

“I’ve got so many songs recorded. Over 50 still unreleased just from the past couple of sessions. We’ve got more sessions coming. I don’t know… at some point we’re gonna have to just start throwing songs out.

All this stuff, we recorded over at Johnny Cash’s cabin – the Cash Cabin Studio. There’s a presence out there, and there’s an immediate reverence from the band when we get there. But there’s also this open avenue for anything goes. Grab your guitar, your keyboard, whatever you’re playing and let’s give it hell. We’re out there making some of the best music I’ve ever gotten to record right now.”

Sounds like Jamey Johnson and his band are making the most out of their time spent at the Cash Cabin.

And to think that it’s a place that Johnny Cash played a significant role in bringing to life. As Johnson stated, there’s a presence there that is apparently undeniable, and gets he and his bandmates in the right mindset for musical collaboration and creation.

While they are there though, Jamey Johnson says there’s not a minute that goes by where he takes being at the Cash Cabin for granted. In his opinion, the place they are making music could just as well stand as a monument to the past:

“It feels like it should be (a museum). And it feels like the kind of place that, if it were open to the public, every bit of that would be behind glass. You’d just get to walk up to doorways and look in there and see it. And yet, we get to go in there and turn the stuff on and play and record.”
